Help with driver for Canon Pixma MP540

Hi, I have a canon MP540 and although ubuntu sees the printer, any jobs just queue and the printer shows as idle.
I am guessing the correct drivers aren't installed, but don't really know where to start installing the correct ones.
Any help is appreciated!

The MP450 is quite a bit different to the MP540 I think.

I'm sorry but i don't have that particular printer, so I can't be more helpful.

Have you tried the workaround for 450?

So now if someone could just tell me how to use these files for Ubuntu it would save me a fair bit of time and effort because i'm really not very good at installing software on linux

noticed that and thought the exact same thing

I tried just opening the debfile and installing it that way but it says 'wrong architecture i386'

It might work for you tho, try downloading the debian. Then unpack it.
Unpack MP540_debian_printer.tar
go into the unpacked file and click on both cnijfilter-common_3.00-1_i386.deb & cnijfilter-mp540series_3.00-1_i386.deb

My printer works, when I do next steps.
1.Go to Canon-pages and download new Debian Linux-drivers.
2. Install them.
3. Go to Application/Add and remove aplications. There are two "printing"-services. Install both.
4. Go back to "Addminstration/Printing".
5. Remove "MP540"-driver.
6. Install new printer and choose first one "USB..."(cnijusb:/dev/usb/lp0).
7. Choose "Canon" and driver "MP540 ver-3.00".

I did these steps and my printer works oK.

Can't find Debian drivers on the Canon page. Pls give me a pointer.
