Question MacBook Trackpad - Absolute Coordinates/Graphics Tablet Style?

I recently came across the Inklet app for Mac, and was wondering if anything similar would be possible under Ubuntu?

Basically what it does is makes the trackpad into a graphics tablet, by mapping the input coordinates absolutely rather than relatively.
I would think something like this would be possible through xorg.conf or hal, but I'm just not sure how.

    I'm using a Macbook (3,1), with Ubuntu 8.10 and 10.04.

Asked again on Ask Ubuntu; didn't get a full answer, but got a very informative reply about work that has been done thus far.
