Okay, asoundconf-gtk isn't going to work until asoundconf works. Simple as that.
On the asoundconf part, I'm guessing you have not done:
asoundconf list
which will tell you what cards you have in there, and then
asoundconf set-default-card (one of the selections goes here)
***Example: asoundconf list gives you SB and USB for your two options, do asoundconf set-default-card SB***
Do that, and it should straighten itself out then.
