Server: PentiumD2C 3GHz, 2GB RAM, 3.25TB, Ubuntu 9.04 (I'm screwed on this one, as three 1TB disks were in a LVM, and now I don't know if I can get anything back)
Media: PentiumD2C 2.2GHz, 1GB RAM, 1TB, Ubuntu 9.04 (Upgraded too soon, so now I can't use Elisa here)
Laptop: PentiumDC 1.66GHz, 1GB RAM, 120GB, Ubuntu 9.04 (Upgrade worked rather good, except my usual strife, which is that I have removed several applications which always gets re-installed on each upgrade)
Desktop: P3 600MHz, 256MB RAM, 40GB Ubuntu 7.10 (Haven't had it out of storage for a while, so haven't upgraded the distro)
Second laptop: Toshiba Equium L20 with no OS, as Toshiba can't give me the correct drivers, even if I give them the correct info, and no distro I have tried will install. And I have tried several; Fedora, OpenSuSE, (K/X)Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Damn Small Linux, Crunchbang, and several others.

Compaq Presario F756NR- Windows Vista Home Premium, Ubuntu 9.04
Acer Aspire 3003LCi- Windows Vista Home Premium
Desktop- Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Desktop(2)- Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Compaq Deskpro EN- Windows XP Professional, Windows 98, Ubuntu 7.04

Dell OptiPlex GL 5100- Windows 98.
Dell OptiPlex 433/Le- Windows 3.1
Tandy 1000 SX- MS-DOS 5.00

I'm thinking about putting XP back on the Acer. or just triple-booting it with XP, Vista, and Ubuntu if it can fit all of that on the hard drive(60GB?).

And for Desktop(2), I might take that XP off, and put some Linux on it.

Actually, I have to update as I picked up another machine :)

Desktop
- AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ (socket 939)
- abit KN8 SLi (NForce 4 SLi)
- 4x 1 GB DDR-400
- PowerColor Radeon HD 3850 512 MB w/Arctic Cooling Accelero S1r2 cooler (idles at 31 C/full-load 40 C completely silent:lolflag: )
- WD Raptor 740GD + Seagate 7200.11 1 TB
- Dell SP2309W + Dell 2001FP in big-desktop mode
- Antec Nine Hundred case
- Debian Lenny amd64

Laptop
- Dell Latitude E5400
- Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 + GM45/ICH9M
- 1 GB DDR2-800 + 2 GB leftover DDR2-667
- 80 GB Hitachi Travelstar 5K250
- 14.1" 1440x900 CCFL display
- Ubuntu 9.04 amd64

HTPC
- AMD Athlon XP 3200+ w/Thermatake Silent Boost heatsink modded with a big fat 92 mm rear exhaust fan from a junked Dell Dimension 300 desktop (just about silent)
- ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe (NForce 2 Ultra-400)
- 100 GB leftover Hitachi Travelstar 5K100 w/44-40 pin PATA adapter + 500 GB Seagate 7200.12
- 1 GB DDR-400
- EVGA GeForce 6200 256 MB PCI
- Hauppauge! WinTV PVR-150 PCI (NTSC)
- Pinnacle pcHDTV 800i PCI (ATSC/QAM/DVB)
- Early 1990s Magnavox CRT TV
- Cooler Master Cavalier case
- Debian Lenny i386

And the new addition...most of it's fresh from the surplus pile!

File/backup/print server
- Intel Pentium III 1.0B w/Antec Solution Socket A heatsink + Zalman Fan-Mate (just about silent...catch a trend here?)
- Shuttle Spacewalker MV25N (VIA PLE133/VT686B)
- 2x 128 MB generic PC100
- 80 GB Seagate 5400.3 leftover notebook drive + 3x 250 GB WD Caviar SE16 in near-2 md RAID10
- Cheap 4-port SiI 3114 PCI SATA-150 controller card
- Cheap Realtek 8169 PCI GbE NIC
- Hideous red and black ASUS mid-tower ATX case
- Debian Lenny i386

They serve me pretty well, considering that I only bought about a half of the desktop parts and the laptop was under $700, tax paid and shipped. The rest of the stuff was parts I found in various surplus piles or things that a few friends of mine no longer could use as Vista wouldn't run on it.

I have two computers that I actually use on a daily basis, as well as some older ones and tons of parts that I'm not doing anything with at the moment. I'll probably be building a home server out of that though.

I have three: My main one (for school and stuff) has Ubuntu Jaunty on it, a laptop with Jaunty too, and an ancient old hand-me-down that is my "learning Linux" machine that I had Slax on, then Crunchbang (http://crunchbanglinux.org). That's the one I can mess up or whatever, so I play with something 'til it breaks, then reload and go again!

Family has two more desktops and two laptops, all with WinXP except the newest desktop which has Vista.

They thought I had "fixed" the hand-me-down and were congratulating me on how well and how fast it was running... they thought I had repaired the old WinXP one! They could hardly believe it when I told them they were using Linux! That's the "Crunchbang with LXDE on top" one.

If you're ever looking for a project, try taking a way outpowered system and putting win 3.11 or something similar on it. You can find drivers. Believe it or not, one of the reat things about an open source community is that somebody got bored and made DVD drivers and software that run in some really old OS. That system has a NVidia TNT2 video card and 512 Meg of RAM. You have to look but people have written mods so win 3.11 will take advantage of all of it. If you get bored and need something to do with old computer parts, it's a fun project.

I have 3 operational computers but I voted 6 because I have 3 more that are built but are missing one or more parts. I name them based on their motherboard

#1 Asus A8N-E

Completely Built, what I am on right now.

#2 Asus-A7V333

Built, missing a hard drive. It can boot off external devices. Doesn't have a decent case, its built in a wooden box. 1.8 Ghz computer with a modified 400 Watt PSU.

#3 TI5VG+

Not built, 333Mhz processor, missing a decent case again.

#4 Asus P5A Super 7

Second specs in my sig, completely built and has puppy linux installed

#5 Unknown name

Missing a PSU and a hard drive, I don't know what the name of the motherboard is but its a 266 Mhz processor.

#6 Matsonic MS8127

Missing processor, making this pretty worthless, socket 7 again.

I have about 5...

1 has no OS, IIRC.
Another is running Mac OS 10.5.7, and also runs Ubuntu 9.04 and Gentoo (not sure which version) though Sun's VirtualBox.
Also, one with both Ubuntu and Windows XP, dual-bootable.
And one with Mac OS 10.4.
Finally, one which I tinker around with alot...I know it has XP on at, and I think I put Ubuntu on it, plus I think one more Linux, but I'm not sure.

Two laptops:

Sony Vaio VGN-430E w/ Ubuntu 9.04
Gateway Solo-3100 w/ Windows 2000 SP4

Tried Xubuntu on the old computer, but I had no sound, spotty Wifi, mostly non-working DVD drive, and it was a little slow. :) Everything works on Win2000, although the soundcard is getting kinda scratchy.

2. Asus Eee PC 1000H: a. Windows XP Proffessional---b. Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04
The Asus is my main PC (yeah, weird to have a netbook as a main, but it's WAY better than the Dell). I'm planning on formatting my disk to leave Ubuntu as my only OS. I really like it, it's lightning fast :O

I have 3...

Desktop: Windows 7 RC also has Ubuntu 9.04. I am pretty sure I will buy Windows 7 when it comes out. So far, I like it a lot.

Laptop: Vista (I actually just gave this one to my fiance b/c I just got a netbook).

Netbook(mini 10): Ubuntu Remix. It took me about a whole day to get this thing all configured and working for my needs. It paid off, I love it now.

I recently set up an external hard drive and printer on the network in my house... it is really really awesome!

This goes without saying that my old computers when to my parents place. They have 2 pretty good comps and 2 mediocre olders ones. I got my dad a 1Tb external hard drive for fathers day and set it up on his network. We are in the process of putting all the old pictures, music and documents on it. I burned him a copy of Windows 7 RC and Ubuntu 9.04 so he can play around with them.

Well I can add one more now. I just installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS on an old Dell Latitude CP. It has a Pentium I chip with MMX technology, runs at 233 Mhz and has a whopping 128 MB of Ram (I splurged and maxed that out).

I'm using it as a portable demonstration platform for the Linux SIG which right now is doing a series on Ubuntu Server. It's a lot easier than carrying a desktop (and keyboard and mouse.. etc.) down the stairs into the computer lab each meeting.

Be cooler if it had a wireless connection so I could put it anywhere ;)

Asus laptop running Vista
HP Omnibook 6100 running Linux Mint 7
Acer Aspire One running Ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix

The Asus is 6 months old and was to be my main pc. The Omnibook is my old main laptop, kept as a backup.

The Acer I bought in order to play around with different Linux distro's. However it has proved it's self so useful that it is now my main computer. I even use it for work. UNR is fantastic and apart from installing the back port for the kernel, in order to get the led working on the wifi. I'm using it as installed. I do use the classic desktop instead of the netbook one.

I also use a 3G usb dongle for when I'm away from a Internet connection.

I have two computers. This laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 dual-booted with kubuntu/vista. And upstairs a 10 year old IBM aptiva dual booted with icebuntu and XP.

In the house altogether at the moment though there are 3 people and 5 computers including me and mine. A mac (mac OS), 3 dell lap tops (Ubuntu, XP), and that 10 year old Aptiva I mentioned.
A robber would be very excited and then dissapointed to find that only one of the computers is worth any money.

When my mom is here + 1 hp pavillion 6000 laptop with vista. (yes i've told her about the BIOS updates and yes it will be a long time before we buy anything with nVidia in it again)

Laptop: Lenovo 3000 N200
2 gb RAM
Intel Core Duo (2x 2000 Mhz)
Nvidia GeForce 7300 GO
DVD-burner/reader
internal cardreader
Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope

Server (backup-thing): my old Desktop
1 Gb RAM
AMD Athlon 1600+ (1400 Mhz)
250 Gb HDD
ATI Radeon 9800 XT
DVD-reader
CD-burner
Ubuntu 8.04.3 Hardy Heron LTS

I previously had Ubuntu Jaunty Server installed on my old Desktop but I did not get it to work as a storage device. Maybe because I was not too much interested in it.
So I will use Hardy as "Server with GUI" and share data via Giver, which is much more easier for me.

Sony Viao (all singing, all dancing laptop) with loads of ram and all sorts of groovy graphics and sound cards and stuff as main family pc.

Samsung NC10 - my netbook - I love it.

Acer aspire one - My wifes netbook - facebook, pidgin, rhythmbox etc (you get the idea)

Some sort of old compaq pc under the stairs as our server which (along with several large hard drives) houses the entire music, video, work, school, etc etc collection along with backups; and does all downloading, torrenting and streaming etc etc (poor old thing)

Another aspire one with a broken screen (plugged in to an external monitor). This serves 2 purposes. I like to break it, just to see if I can fix it. But when it is operational it lives in the bedroom where it is used to view videos (from the aforementioned server).

Oh ....... they all run Ubuntu 9.04 btw except my netbook which dual boots. Sometimes zenwalk, sometimes slackware .. moblin, fedora even arch...who knows what might be on that partition?

Laptop Dual Boot Windows XP and Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)- 1 some odd GHz dual core Athlon, 2 gigs of ram and a lot of spunk. Poor thing's been all over the country and x-rayed more times than I can count.

Main computer is an Asus EEE, with Jaunty.
Desktop, seldom used, dual boots Jaunty and XP.
Nokia N800 runs Maemo, a Linux variant.
Palm Lifedrive runs PalmOS 5.2.
Wife's laptop has Vista. She's in a class to learn to use a computer, and the class uses Windows, so there isn't much choice for now. Dual-boot to Ubuntu will come, and eventually I hope to get her to Ubuntu completely, but there are app issues, some of which she absolutely has to have, and which don't seem to like wine.

Main Computer is a home built desktop running XP and Jaunty 64bit

Two laptops, the new one is a Acer Aspire One dual boot XP and Jaunty

and my old now "hobby" Laptop is a 2006 Compaq it has two hard drives that I switch out so one has XP and the other one has I think Ubuntu minimal with no GUI at the moment. But my power cords died so it is kind of out of commission until I get another cord. But when I get it back I think I'm going to get rid of XP on the one hard drive and but Ubuntu minimal and build my own set-up and then put Arch on the other or Slackware or whatever else I want to try out.

Well, my plans for the server are currently KAPUT! One of the kids spilled water on the laptop so now I have to look at taking what I was going to set up as a server and replace the laptop with that until I can get another laptop or get this one going again.

I've already washed it with rubbing alcohol to was the minerals and stuff off (thankfully it was just tap water) and it looked promising but then when I added another component (WiFi card) and turned it on... well, it hasn't turned on since, even after I've removed it. Grr....

4-5 seems like the most common answer. Is this because no-one's quite geeky enough to own up to the 7 or 8 they have?

My difficulty starts with: What is a computer. I have a desktop PC for 3 of the 4 people in my house. My wife has a laptop. Then there's the Ubuntu server in the roofspace.

Now, do we count the Media player? Not really a "computer" but it's running embedded Linux. If we count that, do we count the thin client I use when I'm down in the garage? It runs Linux, but it's really only a terminal.

How about the PDAs? I used to say "if it ain't programmable, it ain't a computer." That doesn't work any more, as I can write Java on my phone!

The washing machine is probably our most technologically advanced home appliance. I'm quite confident that there's a hint of Linux in there, too!

I suppose "own" and "have up and running" are two questions. Right now three, one Vista desktop, one Vista laptop, and one Ubuntu server.

I hope to build Ubuntu servers for businesses under the banner of Inovagent (http://www.inovagent.com/) since I think 9/10 IT companies will sell a business a Microsoft OS on a server when all the client needs is a file server.

Two. I have an Asus EeePC 1000 (solid-state 40 gig drive) running Eeebuntu Standard 3.0, and it's my first Linux machine. I also have a Dell 8250 at work dual-booting XP Pro and Jaunty 9.04 from separate hard drives.

I had a Dell 8200 with XP Home at home, but my new EeePC and Ubuntu ate it for breakfast. I sent the 8200 to the recyclers a week after beginning Linux.

R[outer]01-Edge - pfSense
S[erver]01-Chaos - Debian 5.0.3
S02-Hydra - Debian 5.0.3
W[orkstation]01-Zeus - Ubuntu 9.04 (I hosed it last night, moving to 9.10 beta now)
W02-Hera - Windows 7 Professional
W03-Poseidon - Ubuntu 9.04
G[ame/entertainment]01-LHTPC - Windows 7 Professional*
M[obile]01-Tethys - Google Android (I do count my smartphone as a computer)
M02-Draco - Ubuntu 9.04 (installed to my portable hard drive so I can take my Ubuntu anywhere :p)

*I would be using Ubuntu 9.04 on it, as this is what I built it in mind for, but I couldn't fix xorg to eliminate overscan for some reason :(

Everything that can be 64-bit is. The exceptions are the router and my phone.

Four:
1. System76 Pan-P5 Laptop w/ Ubuntu, Jaunty 9.04
2. Compaq Presario (orig. ******* ME) now loaded w/Mandriva 2008.0, KDE & Gnome desktops
3. Older Compaq desktop, orig. ******* 98, 10 gig hard-drive. I bought this 'puter as a hobby for $50 back in 2006 so I could "play around" with a Linux OS. I booted Mandriva 2006 onto it, and painfully made my way around the block somewhat. Not being used at the moment.
4. Dell desktop w/******* XP - My ex wife gave it to me in leau of taking care of 2 of her cats for about a year until she gets a bigger house. I needed it solely to run my magicJack phone on as i couldn't get the MJ to work on a Linux OS.

Three living, one dead.

1. Desktop, dual booted with WindowsXP SP2 and Windows7 RC (will eventually be W7 and Kubuntu)
2. Laptop, dual booted with Windows Vista and Kubuntu 9.04
3. G4 Mac with OS x 10.4.11 (will probably upgrade to 10.5 soon)

4. Deceased laptop with Ubuntu 8.10 (might revive it one day)

I haven't been able to completely switch any computers to Linux because I need access to Adobe and MS software for work (although I'm experimenting with VirtualBox on my laptop right now).

Laptop: Arch Linux and a half-built CLFS system.
Desktop: Windows XP and Arch Linux (though this might change to Ubuntu 9.10 if I hear great things).
Old Desktop: Windows 98 (for some really old games that don't work on the newer hardware or OSs).

I used to have Vista on my laptop, but its severe resource hogging, poor memory management, UACs, and various other aspects (such as items on the side bar switching places at every boot) made using it so infuriating that I had to get rid of it. Shame really as I wanted to use it for playing my games whilst on the move.

Not counting obsolete junk:

Main Thinkpad, FreeBSD-8/i386. Secondary Thinkpad Ubuntu/i386.

Main workstation/graphics/server combo, Debian-stable/amd64.

Main non-GUI development, FreeBSD-9/amd64, also carries a disk set for backup stacks. (diskless boot)

Music stuff, Debian-testing/amd64, another harddrive set for backups. (diskless boot)

Xen testing box, well, Xen, Dom0 is Debian-testing/amd64. (diskless but copy kept on local disk, DomU images not on NFS)

Joker machine with 8-something OSes, among them Windows (LOTRO won't do in Wine anymore). Carries random rarely used hardware like tape drives. (diskless but 7 CD/DVD drives :))

Couple of virtual machines with exotic OSes in VMware. NetBSD, Solaris, that kind of thing. Windows 2K in there to feed my Garmin GPS.

Couple of diskless boots of random OSes ready without assigned hardware. Most of what runs inside VMware is from these diskless boots, that means the same OS install can be booted on hardware or in VMware.

Couple of diskless hardware ready to boot into one of those.

Too bad Ubuntu didn't make the cut in the end.

I have two computers.

My main programming computer is an AMD 64 X4200 w/ 2 gigs ram. Used mainly for web development so its absolutely great for this. It runs Kubuntu 9.10.

My second computer is a Dell Inspiron 530S slim tower, 2 gigs ram and has a decent 512MB video card, used mainly for light gaming ( Popcap ), photoshop and other media purposes. It has Vista.

About to get a new computer from a friend, 3 ghz IBM something or other with 2 gigs ram, which I think I will build as far as I can with it and put Kubuntu on it.

I would like to hear the details of this as well.
I think Moopi is talking about a mini-ITX based system using the intel atom CPU:

There are a number of small enclosures available for such a system:

I'm down to
My laptop running Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 or Windows XP (depends on which hard drive I have in there at the time)
Family desktop running Ubuntu 9.04
Unused box with Windows XP, slated to try and upgrade to Windows 7 (yes, it can be upgraded from XP to Win7, no Microsoft doesn't not want you to know it ;) )
The server is running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
The Thinkpad is running Ubuntu 9.10 but is so unstable (if you move it or shift it, it locks up plus booting up is a roulette game whether it will or not). If I can get that running nice and stable, that would probably become my main system
The firewall and content filter is running IPCop Linux
The work laptop (when I bring it in from the car) is running Windows XP, but that's not mine so I shouldn't include it I guess

If you throw Compiz at the older machines they balk at it, but otherwise I love the Linux OS.

I have a Dell Vostro Laptop with Koala, which I recently upgraded from Heron. I have an Airbook with 10.5. I have an HP Pavilion Desktop with Vista. The Dell is my main computer; I built the Airbook with parts from several broken ones and the HP was a gift.
