I have Apple i mac (used less and less but is sometimes useful)
Windows XP with Ubuntu (Dapper) on my Dell.
On my older 410 Dell I have windows 98 and Xandros.

I dont know if I should do this as a seperate post but I have a problem reaching my dialup server Paradise. I have read a jumble of ways that you can encourage Ubuntu to connect to an Internet Exporer connection through the command line. Could anyone give me nice simple instructions using the command line without, or you could do this or that - there must be an accepted path to internet explorer. My problem is that although I have been studying the command line for several months I'm to nervous to use it - it doesn't ever seem to work for me. This is why I want to keep it as simple as possible. Feedback on this would be appreciated because I never realised how useless Linux was unless you can connect to the Internet.

2. Zenwalk...this one is dedicated to Zenwalk...as new versions are released, they will be installed here as the only OS.

Neither is dual core and neither has more than a 1Ghz processor.

That Acer has a SiSM760GX chip and bcm4318 wireless, among other things, that simply won't work in Ubuntu yet. I'm not clever enough to mess around with it. But hopefully I'll ditch it and get a more compatible laptop soon so that it'll be adios M$.

PC9 (mine) - desktop (PIII 1Ghz) running XP Pro w/ GBPVR

There are also two work laptops (one mine, one the wife's), running 2000 and XP, depending on whether we are working from home. I could throw in the Cisco 2916XL switch (primary switch) and two 2507 routers (CCNA lab), just for the sake of explaining why my electricity bill is climbing!

The first step in getting help is to admit you have a problem... But the good news is that I do have two machines in storage that I have successfully shut down permanently!

I currently use three computers:

1: main desktop: Sidux 2007-03 'Gaia' w/KDE dual booted with WinXP
2: test laptop 1- currently running Mandriva One 2008
3: test laptop 2- currently running LinuxMint Celena

Ok, this has changed a little:

1: main desktop: Sidux 2007-03 'Gaia' w/KDE dual booted with WinXP
2: test laptop 1- currently running OpenSuse 10.3
3: test laptop 2- currently running Mandriva 2008 Powerpack

I may put either MV2008 or OpenSuse on both laptops depending on which one I like better after I run them a little while longer.

I had Mandriva 2008 running on my desktop for a little while, but was having quirky permission issues with my USB flash and file sharing. Maybe the install was bad or something.

My ancient IBM Thinkpad 570e is running Archlinux

October 23rd, 2007, 08:03 PM
Home-built machine #1: Ubuntu 7.04
Home-built machine #2: Ubuntu 7.04
Acer Aspire laptop: Ubuntu 7.10/XP
Compaq Presario laptop: Ubuntu 7.10
Emachines PC: Ubuntu 7.10
Gateway laptop: Ubuntu 7.04
IBM Thinkpad (very old): Ubuntu 6.10
Toshiba laptop: Ubuntu 7.04

The Aspire came with Vista, but we upgraded and are much happier. Ubuntu (and Linux in general) is a very bad choice for that laptop, as the card reader and ACPI don't work properly.

October 23rd, 2007, 08:05 PM
Just one. I dual boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu Gutsy.

October 26th, 2007, 02:05 PM
Two with Arch. ...

- A 1Ghz Pentium III Dell Inspiron 8000, 512Mb Crucial PC133, 64Mb Geforce4 440 Go, 1600x1200 LCD, 60Gb 7200rpm HDD + 120Gb 5400rpm HDD and an NEC 8x dual layer DVD+-RW.
- A 550Mhz Celeron Thinkpad, 192Mb PC100, Silicon Motion Lynx graphics, 800x600 LCD, 20Gb 5400rpm and a 24X CDROM.

I have one test machine (http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/09/03/meet-the-little-laptop-that-could/) I borrowed from work, where it was being abused ... or neglected, I haven't decided which. Sometimes it has Ubuntu on it, sometimes something else.

- 450Mhz K6-2, 256Mb, Silicon Motion Lynx graphics, 1024x768 LCD, 5Gb 4200rpm HDD and 24X CDROM

My inventory changes a lot though. The first two are more or less permanent. ;)

1 Desktop dual-boot WinXP and openSuse 10.2
(destined to become primary Windows machine and possibly occasionally boot into Computer #2)
1 Desktop single-boot Edubuntu 7.04 (LTSP Server)
(destined to become primary kids and general server)
1 Desktop single-boot Windows 2000
(destined to be replaced by Computer#1 and becoome a thin client connecting to Computer #2)
1 Desktop single-boot Edubuntu (workstation)
(destined to be replaced by Computer#2, have its files moved over and become a thin client booting into Computer #2)
1 Laptop single-boot DSL (Damned small linux)
( it's a 233MHz Pentium MMX w/64MB ram so it doesn't handle much, going to try Puppy and a Fluxbuntu when I am able to, also going to try and set it up as a thin client to Computer #2)

Oh, and I should be getting a few computers to use as thin clients but I think I'll be looking to get rid of a few systems and keep just what I will use
3 kids + 1 wife + 1 distro-schitzo Linux guy = can never have enough!

I have a PC I built for $300 a year or two ago running Ubuntu 7.10 now (ran Dapper, Edgy, and Feisty). It has a Pentium D 3.0GHz processor, 1GB of 800MHz RAM, a 40GB Western Digital Caviar HDD, nVidia GeForce 7300GT video card, onboard sound, and a DVD-ROM/CD-Burner and a separte Pioneer DVD Burner. My second machine is a Velocity Micro ProMagix with an Intel Core 2 Duo 6850 processor, 2GB of 800MHz RAM, nVidia GeForce 8600GTS video card, soundblaster something sound card, ATI TV Wonder 650 TV Tuner, 400GB 7200RPM Hitachi HDD, and an NEC DVD Burner. They share a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW 22" LCD monitor, Velocity Micro laster mouse, and Velocity Micro keyboard (I have it KVM'ed). I have Saitek A-250 wireless speakers (that surprisingly sound amazing) hooked up to the Velocity Micro machine which runs Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit with Digital Cable Support, and the other PC has some crappy speakers I found (that still sound alright). They both work pretty well, couldn't ask for much more.

I only have one but since i am leaving with my parents being only 15 and all....probably wondering what a 15 year old is doing here well linux fascinates me, eversince i saw the Live Cd...i've liked it....not now but next year in school i'm most likely hopefully gonna take CompSci to learn more but anyways back on subject.....

Windows XP Pro made to look like Windows Vista
Windows XP that really isn't used as much anymore

Toshiba that is running XP...nothing special
Dell that is running XP...nothing special

(The pro that is made to look like Vista is mine but i use all the others which are my parents once in awhile)

~Wondering where linux is, its not in the mix quite yet, i'm trying to install one onto a flash drive and if not then i'll buy myself an everex gPC and hook it up to one of the big screens in my house.

1: Work: AMD athlon xp2000+ 768mb ram: OS: Ubuntu 7.10 + M$ XP (only kept for Dragon speech recognition & OCR).
2: Travel: Toshiba Satellite- P4, 250mb ram: Xubuntu 7.10 +residual M$ XP partition, soon to be shrunk or even deleted,
3: Family/offspring: PIII334 400mb ram Xubuntu 7.10. + M$ XP(v. slow)

All run at perfectly acceptable speed on their respective *ubuntus. All run painfully with M$.

Tried puppy & wolvix Linux, both v. fast but no immediate recognition of NTFS or non-English menus.
I shall stick with (& proselytize for) *buntu.

Well, it depends on what counts! I'm exploring Linux as an alternative to throwing away your two-year computer and buying something that will run Microsoft Windows Vista; I've pretty made up my mind, so just need to get myself to a point where I can support at least one good distro.

HP Pavilion s7715 running Vista Basic with 1GB RAM & 250GB HDD; I have to be able to support what my customers might buy!
Packard Bell iMedia with 512MB RAM & 2 x 40GB HDD running Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy; this is my main internet machine
Dell Inspiron 1100 running Windows XP Home with 256MB RAM & 40GB HDD; runs Intuit Quickbooks, which won't run in Wine
Dell Optiplex 755 with 4GB RAM & ˝TB HDD running Windows XP Professional; This runs VMWare Server, in which there are:
Ubuntu Linux Gutsy 7.10; this'll replace the Packard Bell
Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna; Testing
Debian Linux 4.0 Etch; Testing
Fedora Core Linux 6.0; Testing
Mandriva 2007; Testing
Windows XP Professional; this'll replace the Dell Laptop
Once the Packard Bell and Dell laptop are defunct, I'll have two machines on which I can install pretty much anything. I might buy another HP Pavilion as a proper Linux machine.

December 4th, 2007, 01:13 AM
Server with Ubuntu.
Main rig with XP
I want something like an eeepc soon which I'll stick fluxbuntu on

December 4th, 2007, 01:47 AM
How many Computers do you have and what OS is on each one ?

I'll answer later

I'll tell you... ten.
1: My desktop #1: Ubuntu 6.06 (hopefully will be Gusty soon and Vista )
2: Windows XP (will have Gusty soon)
3: Mac OS X and 9
4: Mac OS 9
5: Mac OS 8.6
6: Mac OS 7
7: Windows XP (again, hopefully will have Gusty)
8: Windows XP (yet again, also will have Gusty)
9: Windows 2000 (better than ME, will have Gusty)
10: Vista (I'll put Gusty on it as well)

Now that's a lot of computers!
Top record: PCs.

I tend to collect old PCs. I rarely buy high end models.

Main Desktop: Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP Home SP2 (multiboot I may eventually run Hackintosh on my desktop, or SuSE.) 3 GHz P4, 512 mb RAM, 200 GB HDD.

Laptop (dead PSU so it doesn't work unless I can fix it): Ubuntu 7.10 and XP Pro SP2. 1.8 GHz P4, 640 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD.

Spare Laptop: Windows 2000 Pro SP4, I plan to install eLive. 800 mhz P3, 128 MB Ram, 15 GB HDD.

Spare Desktop: Fedora Core 8, 384 MB RAM, 1 GHZ P3, 120 GB HDD.

Second Spare Desktop: Windows ME (I plan to format this but it had a strange graphics card so I must find something that works, I also have bigger spare HDDs, so this one's HDD will likely end up in the computer I list after this, I hope PCLinuxOS will run on this), 384 MB RAM, 1 GHZ Athalon, 10 GB HDD.

Really old Desktop: Windows 95 SP1, 400 mhz Pentium, 48 MB RAM, 2.5 GB HDD. This thing runs 95 incredibly fast, 95 is a tad screwed up but I can't find the drivers for this old IBM Aptiva.

My parents PC: Windows XP Media Center SP2. 3.5 GHZ, Athalon 64, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD.

My dad's work Laptop: Windows XP Pro SP2, 512 MB RAM, 40 GB HDD, I think the CPU is like a 2.3 GHz Pentium M.

My Brother's PC: Windows XP Home SP2, 512 MB RAM, 200 GB HDD, 3 GHZ Pentium.

I need a new laptop since my old one died, so I plan to get a new dell (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/vostronb_1000?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~tab=bundlestab). It likely will dual Boot Vista Basic and Ubuntu 7.10

Oh and my modded Xbox (not a 360) runs XDSL, a DSL based distro. The Xbox has an 8 GB HDD (though some, not mine have 10, on standard Xboxes the extra 2 are not used.), a 733 MHZ Intel CPU resembling a Celeron, and 64 MB of RAM.

December 5th, 2007, 07:16 PM
MESH. duel boot vista and ubuntu

ACER. duel boot vista and XP

Old Laptop
ADVENT. Ubuntu. this laptop used to be XP but would over heat and cut out after about 20 mins use.
I tried ubuntu on this comp and it works great, no overheating no cutting out and runs pretty quick too.

December 6th, 2007, 03:52 AM
1) Main desktop: windowsXP, ubuntu 7.10, zenwalk 4.8
2) 2nd desktop: windowsXP, zenwalk 4.8 (I'm thinking I might give fedora '08 a try on this one).
3) Laptop: ubuntu 7.10, slackware 12, zenwalk 4.8.

The windowsXP partitions are remnants from the time before I started using linux. I rarely use them, except for some gaming or watching TV shows on abc.com.

December 6th, 2007, 04:37 AM
I guess I'm in the minority here. Only one computer.

Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop with Mandriva 2008.

*Hmmm...* Just me or my entire house?

Just mine:
- MacBook Pro 15" 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo with Leopard (10.5)
- Custom Built AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (Maybe 3700.. I forget) with 2000 Pro [It's legal, and themed like OS X. :-D]
- Pentium 2 400 MHz with 496 MB of EDO RAM running Ubuntu 6.06 as a LAMP with FTP, e-mail and Naigos server
- Pentium III Toshiba Satellite Pro (I don't have the number handy) running 2000 Adv. Server for VPN and e-mail routing.

Others in the house:
- Custom Built AMD Athlon 64 3600+ or so with Win XP SP2 [Parents]
- Custom Built AMD X2 4800+ (Probably higher..) with Win XP SP2 [Bro]
- Lots of old 486 boxes, and a couple 386s as well.. (Gonna dump those though.. anybody have a desire for one? I'm in MI. lol)
- A Tandy 1000 with DOS 3.3 on 5.25" floppies. :-D (Sorry, this one stays.)

I think that's about it.. There are a few more, but those are the notable ones because they are either always on, or in the case of the 386 and 486 boxes they just take up a lot of room. (The Tandy 1000 is just cool. :-P)

Computers or HDD's with installs in them? XD

I have a total of only 6 working computers.

Custom Build (purchased from a girl in town):
CPU: 2Ghz AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (OC'd)
OS: Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon v7.10

Compaq Presario 5900Z:
CPU: 600Mhz AMD Athlon
RAM: 256MB
OS: Bare (Netinst) Debian v4.0r1 w/ Gnome

There are others, but I'm too lazy to list them now. I will later. I like the Bare Debian since I can pretty much make a customizable computer for the use of simple configuration for exclusive use for Internet and Word Processing.

My Kubuntu system is for gaming and the such.

 Get ready, here it comes...
What I have on my machines...

On my desk:
PC1 - Primary Web Dev and Graphics Box (trying to get used to Ubuntu/Kubuntu for this)
WinXP Pro SP3 - Homebuilt MSI K8N Neo w/AMD64-2800+ 1GB Radeon w/256MB
After I get more familiar with Linux, I may turn this machine into my main Linux Box. It's the most capable PC in the office right now.

PC2 - Secondary Box and OS experimenting
WinXP Pro SP2 - HP Vectra P4 1.5G * 256MB RAMBUS * 32MB Generic Video
Ubuntu LAMP Server, K/Ubuntu 7.10, FreeNAS and others

PC3 - Experimental (Wife's old retired Desktop)
Kubuntu (Fiesty upgraded to Gutsy), FreeBSD, LinuxMCE, Sabayon Mini 3.4, and others (until I find one that works well on this box) - Homebuilt Abit Mobo w/Athlon 1.2G * 256MB RAM * 16MB ATI RagePro

An older iMac G3 233 running Mac OS X Panther (going to Run Ubuntu on it)

Also - and old ancient Toshiba ToughBook laptop (wish I could get Ubuntu on this baby!)

Other machines in the house include:
PC4 - Wife's PC - General Purpose Use
WinXP - MSI mobo w/1.3G Duron - 1GB DDR * Built-in Video

PCs 5&6 - Kid's Machines
Dell Optiplex GX200's (700Mhz * 256MB RAM) running WinXP and lot's of games.

And an old Mac PPC Server 8600/250 that I haven't turned on in years, to see if I can make something useful out of it running Ubuntu or other Linux Flavor. That would make me smile... :-)

And here's what I want to do with some of these computers:
1. Linux Media Center with DVR
2. Home server with large backup capabilities (one of the low powered machines may do for this running FreeNAS or the like)
3. A LAMP webserver to host some of my web clients
4. Home Automation Linux Box

Not to mention a faster, newer, hyped up Linux machine as my work horse. :)

See you!

December 22nd, 2007, 10:47 PM
I have 3 Laptops.

December 24th, 2007, 03:35 PM
Main system: Athlon X2 - Ubuntu and XP
I am in the process of switching to Ubuntu from XP.
I would like to dump XP but I need it to print to printable CDs.
Also after years of trying I finally succeeded in getting my wife off
Mac and on Windows. She is not ready for another change.

Test system: Athlon xp +2600 - Ubuntu and XP.

Multimedia system: VIA EN-15000 - XP
I would like to switch to Linux.
Ubuntu is to slow to play a video on this machine
so I am stuck with XP.
rgb1701 has an excellent rant on this subject here:

Laptop 1: Asus Eee PC - Default Xandros

Laptop 2: Fujitsu P1050 - Ubuntu
I am looking for something more suitable for a slow computer.
I'm thinking maybe Fluxubuntu.

Server: VIA Cl-6000 - XP
This machine is used as a DHCP server, download manager,
and file server for music and video files.
I am currently working on trying to set up a DHCP server in
Ubuntu so I can get rid of XP on this machine.

Second test machine: VIA M-10000 - Puppy

Brick: VIA EX-15000

Need to get a Mac...

Get a Mac, put Ubuntu for PPC on it with the LiNsta theme. Looks like Vista, runs as Linux ... but it is on a Mac...besides being a fine functional machine ...it makes for a great conversation piece. The radar screen saver looks really great on it :)

3 Desktops and 2 laptops. Wow, didn't realize there were so many comps in my house.

1.) Dual boot windows xp and ubuntu feisty fawn
2.) Dual boot windows xp and ubuntu feisty fawn
3.) Just windows XP...sigh. Can't get my sister to switch :(

1.) Just windows xp-for windows only business apps
2.) Ubuntu gutsy gibbon

I'm a college student who has half converted my family to ubuntu. My mom who has very little computer knowledge happily uses feisty fawn for her simple needs. We only keep windows on her computer because she has some ridiculous embroidery machine that only works in windows.

Dad is learning linux, so he dual boots his desktop. My sister tried ubuntu, but I had to leave for school and couldn't help her with her simple problems. She had simple problems that I could have fixed, but wasn't there, so she angrily switched back to xp. Sad

But my laptop is sola-ubuntu 7.10.

An old 486 with either DOS 6.22 or FreeDOS on it. I can't remember which and haven't booted it ages.

An old 500MHz Celeron that doesn't have a hard drive in it currently. I use it with a LiveDVD or LiveCD when I have hardware issues with my primary system. Fortunately, I've only had to do that once.

Neither of these have a monitor.

My primary system is an AthlonXP 2800+ with Win2k and Gentoo on it.

We have 4 active systems here...

Main Desktop:

May 2nd, 2008, 08:02 PM
In no particular order:

- Apple Powerbook G4 w/ OS X 10.4
- EEE PC w/ Kubuntu Gutsy
- Thinkpad X31 with Ubuntu Hardy and Kubuntu Desktop dual booting Slackware 10.1
- Thinkpad X60s with Ubuntu Hardy and Kubuntu Desktop
- Custom Build Quad Core 3.2GHz Intel With Ubuntu Hrdy and KDE-base
- Custom Build Dual Core 2.4GHz intel With Ubuntu Hardy and KDE-base dual booting XP (Have not been onto XP since sometime in 2007, strictly for games)
- Mac Mini (Intel) with Ubuntu Hardy
- Mac Mini (G4) with OSx 10.4 Server

I have more but nothing outside of this list has been powered on in over a year. Some in over a decade.

VM wise I experiment a lot more with different OSes. But for the base I found it easier to keep them fairly consistent to ease maintenance.

I have quite a few computers, I'm basically my household's tech guy.
Let's see

A Pentium 4 box that serves as the main workstation for most family members - Ubuntu 8.04
An Athlon64X2 4200+ box that's used mostly for gaming, but also other basic stuff - Dual boot Ubuntu 8.04 and Win XP
An old 486 that's being used as a central storage - Debian Sid
A Pentium 2 box that broadcasts a house-wide radio station for when we want the same thing playing in every room - Debian Sid
An iMac G5 that's used as another basic workstation - Mac OS 10.5.2
A Penryn MacBook Pro that I use for college stuff - Mac OS 10.5.2
Several other boxes waiting for me to fix them up and either replace some current ones, give away, or use for some other purpose - All will probably run Ubuntu 8.04

May 10th, 2008, 03:18 PM
I got 2

Compaq Presario v6000- Ubuntu 8.04
IBM Thinkpad t40- windows xp professional

May 10th, 2008, 04:18 PM
I have 3 at home, one desktop belonging to the whole family, one laptop belonging to me, and the other belonging to my sis.

Desktop: Windows XP (the system is horribly slow. It takes ages to start up)

My laptop: Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. Initially it was packaged with Linpus Linux, but I changed it to XP. Owing to Linux's stabiliy, security and speed, I switched to Ubuntu. First few months of using it is a nightmare, but I have finally gotten used to it. Now I am loving it to bits!

My sis' laptop: A macbook with OSX tiger. She needs it for her school work which involves web designing, graphics imaging and video editing. I told myself that I wanted a macbook, but ubuntu looks fine for me :)

May 10th, 2008, 04:49 PM
I am living windows free.

1st Gen. Macbook, Dual boot Kubuntu KDE4 and Mac OS X Leopard

Desktop I built 1.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, Kubuntu 8.04 Kde 3

And an old Dell Latitude that dates back to 2000 that was given to me. Running Xubuntu 8.04 very well. :D
