Main computer - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon
Backup computer - AMD Sempron 2500+ Ubuntu Hardy Heron
Test machine - AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ No OS yet (maybe SUSE 11?)
Main data storage - AMD Athlon XP 2400 Windows XP
Internet gateway - old clunker Windows 2000
Unix Sparcstation - Solaris 10
Unix UltraSparc - Solaris 10

The "test machine" listed above is still being built - I did most of the work last night, I will do more next Friday night - I have all the parts except the memory. :)

In our little family, we have 4 computers. A little overkill if you ask me.

My computer: Custom built Core2Duo running Ubuntu 7.10.
Wifes computer: HP nc6000 running Ubuntu 7.10.
Server: HP evo D500 (or so) running Ubuntu Server 8.04.
Work laptop: Fujitsu Siemens lifebook S7110 running Windows XP SP1 (SP2 is incompatible with workplaces VPN solution... THAT'S odd...)

HP ones are second hand.
Wife wants a new one, but she'll have to wait. Summer holliday first!

Desktop:

Windows XP Home service pack 2
Ubuntu 7.10 (unfortunately stuck in 600*800, let's hope the new open ATI drivers don't fail miserably like the propriatary ones.)
I'd like to get rid of Windows, but 600*800 just isn't usable.:(

Laptop:

Ubuntu 8.04, runs beautifully, only a couple of hiccups but I'm fixing those one by one.
Have a 45 GB partition set aside for Windows XP, but I haven't needed Windows for anything yet, so I don't think I'll use it for that. Maybe I'll put BSD or something on it, any recommendations?

Laptop: Apple Macbook: Leopard and Heron
Desktop 1: Athlon XP Box : XP and Heron
Desktop 2: Athlon 64 x2 Box : Heron all on its own

All relatively happy running ubuntu, macbooks sound is a bit squiffy, athlon 64 box won't wake up from suspend nicely and gets hard locks occasionally (think it might be cool and quiet playing up)

Need another os to plonk on the new amd box, then I can have dual boot on everything....something utterly random is in order I think

My household has 3 computers... mine, my brother's and my father's. Mine and my brother's have Xubuntu 8.04 and XP (mine having XP Pro), and my father's just has XP... He'd have Xubuntu 8.04, but I let my cousin borrow my disk, and I don't want to make another one. Just because I have XP, don't let that discourage you... I haven't used it in over a year... my brother doesn't use his computer, and the only reason my father stuck to it long enough for me to misplace my Live CD is because he 'warships' an antiquated program which could probably just as soon be replaced with web apps as it could with Open Source software. My influence with Linux covers a broader area than this however... I have switched two of my cousins, and would have switched another still if it hadn't turned out that her computer was failing.

I also have a pet tablet PC and a pet laptop from work that are frequent house-guests of mine. They run Vista and XP, respectively. They also both run Ubuntu if you do just the right things at boot time, but I'm the only one who knows that.

After a lot of fighting and fretting I finally got my router working.

IPCop (router) -- recommend it because in 1/2 hour it was up and running and once I remember the password I'll be configuring it throug the web interface. Very easy to get going with it, and small download.
Windows XP (my wife's)
Edubuntu (for the kids) 7.10, but need to upgrade to 8.04 LTS when I get the chance. Pulise Audio screwed something up so I hope an upgrade will solve it.
Ubuntu Server (file server) but that desperately needs to be revamped. May try openSUSE for it again because I like the idea of having Yast available over SSH. Also may try CentOS.
Laptop... hmmm.... where do I begin?
Hard Drive 1
Windows XP for professional work
openSUSE for desktop
Hard Drive 2
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4.0 remix
looking at the possibility of Fedora 9
looking at the possibility of PCLinuxOS
looking at the possibility of Mandriva

2 GX110's I need to figure out what I'm going to do with.

Toshiba Satellite R20 Convertible Notebook:
Win XP Pro / Tablet PC
I've thought about dual boot, but something in a VM is more likely to happen.

Used to be a Compaq, but it's now custom desktop:
Dual boot XP Home (used for media server to my XB360, engineering apps such as AutoCAD Mechanical and Inventor, etc) and Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit

-----

2 at my parents house:

Custom Desktop:
XP Pro (for parents to use)

HP Pavilion Desktop
XP Home (for younger brother)

And I've donated enough parts to build several computers to be used for underprivileged schools in the state.

One, and possibly one more soon:

Desktop: Hewlett-Packard with Xubuntu 8.04 (faithfully updated) on one HD, WinMe on the second HD (I'm replacing it with Fluxbuntu), and live CDs of dyne:bolic and Tmxxine on hand for an occasional change of scenery... ;)

Possible second: A Sony Vaio laptop that will be sold by my current full-time employer when the office closes this September. It could end up running either Elive (Gem) or TinyMe. (Or Fluxbuntu, for that matter. My options are always "open"...)

Should soon get another (slightly older) laptop, will see what I'll install, and looking for parts for a new desktop. The current desktop might become my test desktop and the current test box a test server.

Besides these I manage the office IT. I'm the somewhat closest thing to an sys admin in our office. So, if you know about something.... I guess we all know about that. :D
That would be about 15-20 Macs (2 OS9, the rest OSX 10.2-10.5) and a Linux server (Debian 4, 64bit version).

Computer one. Our laptop
Compaq Computer. Celeron M, 512MB RAM, Integrated GPU, Broadcom wifi. PITA to run Linux on, but it works! :)
OSes:
Ubuntu 8.04
Mandriva 2008.1 Powerpack as secondary OS
"Scratch" partition for secondary OS.

Computer two. Our Mac laptop
Apple iBook G4. Optical drive currently broken :(. Everything else is OK. 1.33Ghz, 40GB HD, 512MB RAM
Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard"

Computer three. Our "workhorse", Mac desktop
Apple iMac Core 2 Duo. 2.16ghz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HD, X1600 Radeon. External HD - 160GB is sometimes attached, and so is a 100GB external HD.
Mac OS X 10.5 "Leopard" Tricked out with MacPorts and a ****load of apps.
Windows Vista, games, fun stuff, etc.
VM: Ubuntu, OpenSuse, Other LiveCDs, Windows 98, Windows 95, Windows XP... etc.
It's the most powerful computer we have (my mom owns it, like most of the other computers here.) It is assigned to do VM, use Mac OS, and is my mom's main computer, plus when I want a processor intensive task (e.g. Video Work) it gets done here.

Computer four. My own personal desktop.
~1.5 Ghz P4.
512MB RAM
Intel Integrated GPU.
80GB HD
Ubuntu 8.04.

Broken/unavailable computers:
Toshiba laptop:
Windows XP, Celeron M, 512MB RAM, Broken. Not sure what to do, we're gonna give away either the Compaq or the Toshiba.
Sony VAIO laptop:
Windows something, PIII, needs power cord. Once that's fixed, on goes some variety of Linux. :D
Mac Mini desktop
1.25 Ghz, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, I believe. Currently not available.
Runs Mac OS X "Tiger."

3 Computers, 2 live, one dead.

1. Laptop (mine) - Ubuntu 8.04
2. Desktop (parents) - Windows XP SP2, runs slower than mollases but mom isn't interested in fixing it.
3. Desktop (mine) - Windows 98 Second Edition, till it fell victim to the dust in my room that it collected only being turned on once or twice a year, PSU shorted, and the thing is so far and away outdated that it wasn't worth bothering with. I did save the CPU heat sink to run on my laptop PSU, since they're roughly the same size. (Early AMD Athlon, 500mhz. And to think, that thing was blisteringly fast compared tot he W95 computer we had before it).

Thinking about a Mini-ITX build in the future for fun.

Dual boot Ubuntu 8.04 with XP on internal hard drive
Mint 5 on external USB HDD
Puppy 4 and Nimblex 2007 on 1gb USB stick

All systems are controlled by Grub via Ubuntu partition on main internal HDD.

I have no idea why I have done this other than it's been raining a lot this summer in England.

Due to lack of money, I only have a laptop. That said, it isn't lacking in OS choice, quadruple booting into XP, Mandriva 2008.1, Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 4 and a Wubi install of KDE 4 8.04.

Why? Mandriva is the main one, 8.10 I'm trying to see if I like GNOME plus I like using things that are in testing for some reason, XP is for gaming and Wubi is there because I feel like it.

A total of 3 running Gutsy (one is my primary computer in my media room)

One "crash test dummy" .. it gets stuff put on and removed all the time. (just took Mint off of it .. nice system!!)

A total of 2 running XP. One is a media machine/print server in my media room and it also holds all of my high priced Adobe programs .. little else. It lives on a KVM with the primary Gutsy machine. (both use the 24" wide screen cinema display)

One XP in my guest room (along with one of the Ubutu machines on a KVM) for those of my guests that are absolutely terrified of using anything but Windows. I also use that to sync to a pair of iPaq PDA's running Windows mobile 2003 (used primarily for GPS) (both are wireless as are the PDA's.)

One gutsy machine is in my Atrium for those days when I want a lot of sunshine .. it is wireless.

EVERYTHING is on my home network.

(and a grand sum total of 7 printers dispersed between 3 rooms and those computers (only two will NOT work on Linux or across the network .. one being a Mac Raster based CMYK laser, so that is obvious and the other WILL work on Linux with a bit of work .. an Avery label printer .. just have not bothered setting that one up!)

Athlon 64 x2 3800+, 1.5GB ram, geforce 7900GS/OCE 256MB video, 320GB sata2 + 200GB ATA100 HDDs. Dual boot XP pro (extremely heavily customized and hardened) SP2 and ubuntu 8.04

Phobos (hybrid server)
Intel STL2 server motherboard, dual P3 933 CPUs, 1GB PC100 ECC/registered ram, PCI radeon 7000 64MB, 120GB + 20GB HDDs. XP pro SP2 right now, trying to get refresh rate problems worked out in ubuntu.

Toshi (OLD little tiny microlaptop the size of a video cassette)
P120MMX, 32MB ram, 40GB laptop hdd, DOS 6.22 with addons to be an MP3 player, playing with various really old linux and BSD installs to get them fully functional instead of DOS.

ROTO-ROUTER (Linksys WRT54GSv2) 32MB ram, 8MB flash, DD-WRTv24 embedded linux with various modifications.

This is another poll - and hopefully will elicit some clever quirks or original comments.
I was sitting in my network area at home (glowing) - when reading another thread and realised that there are possibly many more people that work on more than one PC at the same time - and have more than one PC at home on their network. So the poll is as follows

How Many computers do you own or can you (with some spare time) build up out of all the spare parts lying around in drawers and cupboards?

I know my count is presently
- two laptops - trying to sell one
- two servers
- one desktop
- one spare
And I am only one person but have family members working on the desktop.

A PC laptop and a powerful PC desktop:

the laptop boots Vista / Ubuntu Studio
the desktop books Vista / Hackintosh OSx86

all off seperate HDD giving me all the OS's and all with their correct full installs, on just 2 machines. The best bit is, dispite the fact that the two are worth about £2,500 I paid just £800 for them... which is less than you pay for a bottom of the range Mac...

2 desktops, 2 laptops

1. desktop, intel C2D E6700, 4gb ram, geforce 8800GTS - primarily a gaming machine, running windows tinyXP and a rarely used fedora install.

2. desktop, amd athlon 2800+, 1gb ram, geforce 6600GT - file server, media server, print server, wifi access point. Runs Ubuntu 8.04.1.

3. laptop, compal F71, intel C2D 2.66GHz, 2gb ram, geforce 8800GT, basically does everything the first two do when either of them is unavailable. Due to size, weight and a semi-broken battery, it isn't moved around much unless the relocation is at least semi-permanent. Runs tinyXP and Ubuntu 8.04.1.

4. laptop, asus eeepc 901, intel atom, 1gb ram, intel gma 950 integrated graphics - the only one I can actually be bothered to drag around with me, mainly used for uni work and listening to music. Running ubuntu-eee 8.04.1.

Currently 2 computers:

1. Desktop machine running Ubuntu Hardy.

2. Eeepc running Ubuntu Hardy.

In a month or so, I'll be given an old machine (P3, I think). I haven't quite decided what to do with it... I'll probably stick Ubuntu on it and use it as some sort of network server. Or maybe a sandbox/target for my computer security experiments.

I currently have 6 computers, 5 running Linux (8.04 Hardy Heron) and one runs WinXP (for supporting astronomical imaging software - there is some on Linux but it's not all there yet).
Laptop - Dell 1720 running 8.04 and WinXP under VMware.
Desktop running 8.04 for a compile workstation (for embedded work).
Desktop running 8.04 and Win2k under VMware for astro imaging support.
Server running Gutsy (I think) as my file server.
CVS server running Gutsy as a repository for software.
HP B180 PA-RISC running a very early Debian release (must upgrade that soon), just for fun!
Desktop running WinXP (shudder) because I have done a little windows work in the past ;-)

two that are actually mine. one is a laptop which currently has mandriva installed (which is horrible btw) and my desktop which is pentium 4 etc with ubuntu and windows xp installed on seperate hard drives.

vista was far to unstable and memory hogging and i'm going to try and build ubuntu up from the command line for the laptop.

Based on the poll question 'How many computers do you really own?', I selected 2, however, the thread question is different again!

In this household, there are 6 computers - 2 laptops and 4 desktops. Both laptops (old Toshiba's) run XP, but hardly ever get used these days.

Of the 4 desktops, 2 are XP (my partners and her sister's) whilst the other two are Ubuntu 8.04 (the 'main' desktop), with the other being an old Dell with 7.10 installed, but is only a 'stand-by' unit if the main desktop goes belly up.

Therefore, I really own 2, whilst the other 4 are 'owned' by MS.

6 desktops + 1 laptop.

One desktop is completely Ubuntu, everything else is XP. I'm working on changing two more desktops (have to overcome some objections by the users) over to Ubuntu entirely, and dual booting two others. The last desktop will remain my gaming rig with XP. The laptop will remain XP as it is used for my work software which is Windows only.
