KDE is intriguing but until they get some decent applets (like GNOME has) I can't do it...

It's got plenty, most of them are just not included in a default Kubuntu installation.

It goes both ways. I'd love to have KNewsticker in GNOME.

    I have used KDE 4.0 and 4.1

I absolutely despise it. I love KDE 3.5 and Gnome. But when I gave KDE 4 and 4.1 a try, I found it to be unusable.

I really, REALLY hope KDE4.2 brings back the good ol customization and stability that KDE 3.5 has.

I used it on Mandriva about a year ago. It worked fine but was hard to configure as you have to edit the config yourself.
    Hmmm...

Re: Why KDE 4.2 will rock

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up...

While I appreciate the packagers that give us KDE-Nightly via Project Neon, the packages aren't meant for everyday use. For those interested in running KDE 4.2 Beta 1, some kind people on the Kubuntu Team packaged us KDE 4.2 Beta 1 and it will overtake the previous installation of KDE 4.1. Seems to be working pretty well. It hasn't crashed on me, my settings got migrated, and it looks fantastic. Furthermore, some of the quirks from KDE-nightly aren't present here (Dolphin "No Text" problem, applications missing from Kickoff, system sounds missing, etc.) Here are the instructions. Have fun guys!

P.S. For those running the KDE-nightly packages and want to remove them, I just did a simple:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get remove kde-nightly*
Seemed to take care of it for me. I might be mistaken, but KDE-Nightly and the version installed from the info above can co-exist. So, there's no rush to uninstall KDE-nightly. Also, I wouldn't know how to downgrade back to 4.1 after the update. I don't know if it's possible, so be careful!
