Which program to import and view photos?

Ive recently changed to Ubuntu from WinXP, and having real problems trying to find a program that will do the same as cam2pc did that I used in Windows.

I used it to import photos automatically from my camera, to a specified folder based on the date the photo was taken, and then be able to browse the photos grouped by date/folder, and perform simple resizing.

Is there a program I can do this with? Ive tried F-spot, but you can't browse the photos grouped by folder (I think), just the whole lot of them together inside the main photo location. I tried Gthumb, but that wouldn't import to a specified folder for each set of photos based on date they were taken.

Any other suggestions, pleeease?

Try Picasa from Google. There's a linux port now.

Have you tried cam2pc under WINE in Linux?
Download the freeware version and run it under WINE
http://www.nabocorp.com/cam2pc/freeware.php
If this works, then you could install the full version if you have it under WINE

i use gthumb to import my digital cam photos. works great.

As default, F-Spot organizes photos by date (assuming that your photos have date info). To organize photos by topic, add tags to the photos.

blueMarine is a very extensive package for viewing, tagging, etc, but I guess it is bit too much and it is still beta.
gThumb has been mentioned, there is also XnView. I think gThumb should be easily installable from the synaptic package manager. Picasa is also a good choice. If you really interested in photography you should check out: http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/ but is more focussed on hobbyists.

I use GThumb. It puts a folder named for the current day in my home directory and puts the pictures in that folder. Gthumb will also batch resize and do some other basic editing chores.

Here's a link for a site that explains how to get and install Picassa for Linux (some of the text in the tutorial is cut off by bad framesets, but you can click inside the frames to highlight the text, then paste into a text file to view it--before using the commands):

I was also looking for a good graphical file browser for images, and just installed and tried gthumb. I wouldn't recommend it for managing Camera Raw files (other than viewing them, deleting files).

I tried the renaming function. Gthumb took six minutes to rename 9 images (at an average of 14.7megs per file). Once the renaming started, the function couldn't be killed, except from the command line. Any attempt to close the program within the GUI results in an endless loop of popups illustrating the option to close the window. You CAN close it. But it just reopens immediately.

Shotwell is default now in ubuntu.
Digikam is the most advanced. You can install it easily in Gnome although you might that it is a KDE application.
