I believe a lot of Web 2.0 stuff is being done in Ruby... in fact, the name "Ruby on Rails" is probably the catch-phrase of the minute.
If you're familiar with .NET, you'll probably feel right at home in Mono. The Gnome developers are really getting behind Mono at the moment, and I'm sure KDE will eventually follow.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
