What are modern (2024) choices for identity/access management?

So, I gather NIS is considered old. I've never gotten LDAP to work. I'm only running Linux (Ubuntu, Raspberry Pi OS). The only thing I want to achieve is to synchronize uid:gid, user name, and passwords across Linux machines. I want an open "solution". What should I use/consider?

salt, puppet, ansible, any modern configuration management stack will let you sync user attributes and much more.

What do you think about using Windows? Besides, I have not tried Linux so I would like to know more about it.
