3-5 seconds? Count your blessings. Mine is 3-5 seconds from the last log messages to the login screen... Then after login, a black screen for 20-30 seconds until the Graphics Layer loads and the Desktop appears. I except that as my normal.
I got rid of the flicker to the login screen, by using a video set boot paramter for 1920x1080-32 in Grub so it sets KMS...
