Restore / Add line numbers to text files

Ubuntu 18.04 updated.
For some reason my line numbers in my text files have gone away.
How to restore/add?

Assuming that you are using gedit:
Hamburger menu -> Preferences -> View tab -> Display Line Numbers

You are correct I am using gedit. Have used it for a long time. I have searched all the
usual places for the "preferences" menu but it is gone. I have no idea about a hamburger
menu. Where might it be?

The "hamburger menu" is the top right button with 3 horizontal lines. The setting you're looking for is exactly where's described in the previous comment.

Sir,
Hamburger menu new term to me. After some finagling got the full menu to show,
following procedure got Display Line Numbers to show.
