    Dual Boot with two drives grub rescue

    Hello,

    i have got on my laptop two HDDs.
    The first one is an SSD which contains only Windows 7 (sda).
    The second is connected to the sata interface where the DVD used to be.This one has a partition with ubuntu.(sdb)
    The problem is after I installed ubuntu on the second HDD (windows were installed already) i cant boot.
    I get an error
    No such device 22a3e1f4-e88b-4241-982f-515a316cb4b6
    grub rescue>

    This device seems to be my sdb1-->ubuntu installation on the second HDD.

    Actually i can boot only if I get into boot mode while the laptop starts and select boot from Hard-Drives.
    If i change the boot priority and select the second HDD as first boot priority nothing happens :/

    I attach ,my pastebin from boot-repair.

    thx guys

    User choice: Is sdb (500GB) a removable disk? no
    =================== Final advice in case of recommended repair
    Please do not forget to make your BIOS boot on sdb (500GB) disk!

    =================== Default settings
    Recommended-Repair
    This setting would reinstall the grub2 of sdb1 into the MBRs of all disks (except USB without OS).
    Grub-efi would not be selected by default because: no-win-efi
    Additional repair would be performed: unhide-bootmenu-10s

    =================== Settings chosen by the user
    Boot-Info
    This setting will not act on the MBR.

    Re: Dual Boot with two drives grub rescue

    Use the Ubuntu installation medium, open a terminal and run: blkid, you may need sudo blkid. Check to see if sdb1 is: 22a3e1f4-e88b-4241-982f-515a316cb4b6

    Please use code tags for long text to preserve formatting & make it easier to review.
    You can easily add code tags in Advanced Editor with # icon in edit menu.

    I do not like Boot-Repair's auto fix when you have more than one drive. It always installs grub to the MBR of every drive. Best to leave a Windows boot loader in sda, so you can directly boot it. You can use Boot-Repair to add a Windows type boot loader to sda with its advanced mode where you select a system and select which drive to install boot loader.

    But you could be an exception. Can you boot from sdb from BIOS? Some with convertible DVD, make a hard drive data only and you cannot boot from that drive. Does BIOS system give an option to boot from drive that is sdb?

    Also do not install grub to a partition like sdb1. But it is space on a drive's partition that is not used normally so does not really matter.

    Re: Dual Boot with two drives grub rescue

    Thx for the tip with the code tags!

    @oldfred

    I have the option to boot from cd/DVD , where HDD is now installed, but then nothing happens.Again rescue mode.

    @yancek

    Yes,sdb1 is that device!

    I attach below the new export from boot-repair.
    I belive what will solve the problem is to make Grub on sdb1 look for the .img at the sector 1 of the second HDD.
    Because now "Grub2 (v1.99) is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks at sector 1 of
    the same hard drive for core.img. core.img is at this location and looks
    in partition 112 for ."
    But i dont know if that will work for sure and also dont know how to do it!

    Thx again for your help!

    Re: Dual Boot with two drives grub rescue

    Go to the site below which offers several methods of trying to repair the bootloader on Ubuntu. The boot repair may work, if not you can try from the Live CD. The surest method is the chroot option which unfortunately, is also the most complicated for a new user. Read carefully.

    Re: Dual Boot with two drives grub rescue

    You would have to have a second hard drive boot entry in the choices of drives to boot to be able to directly boot hard drive. My flash drives in USB ports are seen as another hard drive boot item.

    If reinstall of grub to sda does not work to boot sdb, then you may have to create a /boot partition on sda of about 300MB (if you clean it periodically) and then you will boot from sda, but rest of system then should work from sdb.
