It appears that it is trying to go to some Facebook page, but the page never loads. How do I stop this from happening?

So that's your startup page ?
If so then you can go to Edit, then Preferences at the bottom of the menu.
Write what page you want in "Home Page:" or just click Restore to default.
Close Firefox and open it again.
If you cant find the Menu bar you might need to press Alt on your keyboard.
This behavior is by design.
