installing 3rd party applications

so i recently installed ubuntu (wubi....) and got all the drivers i needed (somehow, very glad my computer programming and problem solving degree came in handy here XD ) now my question is how to install third party apps? ones that arent on the software center, and after that, if there are any applications to convert from .exe (windows) to ubuntu (.deb i suspect after my little digging) im a little..... buzzed atm so i guess i just got lazy and decided to ask instead... i remember reading somewhere that there are several methods...

btw, i recently got interested in actually going for ubuntu after the whole android fanboyism x86 project i decided to take onto my pc (which i found out is full ubuntu kurnel so i went with the real thing lol)

But you can install wine, it's in the repos(the software center).

You can look at the winehq page and find out how well yor apps have fared in wine.

"3rd party" applications are installed:
1. by using PPA (adding personal repository of the application)
2. from .deb file
3. from install script (usually .run file) provided by the applicaiton maker
4. from source (compile per instructions found in .tar.bz file)

This is not precisely accurate. Android is based on the Linux kernel.

I know that is all very pedantic, but I think it is important to know roughly the structure of things. Credit where it is due, and all that.

So, anyway, Android is, at least in a broad sense, a Linux distribution, as is Ubuntu. They are both great things, and are based, ultimately, on the same Kernel. That is not to say that Android is based on the Ubuntu kernel.
