One more question. I saw a blog of yours about upgrades. I am being offered an upgrade to 11.10 which I thought I was downloading. Should I go ahead and upgrade or should I follow your blog advice? Or is there another way?
I guess the version of wubi you downloaded was 11.04 (makes sense if you're being offered an upgrade to 11.10). If you had got it from the site I mentioned it would already be 11.10. In a few days, the Wubi.exe there will be replaced with one for 12.04.

It doesn't make any sense to take a brand new install, and upgrade twice. It's much simpler to reinstall the 12.04 version in a week (and saves you a lot of downloads).

If I were you I'd play with 11.04 with a view to replacing it when 12.04 comes out. If you are planning to use Ubuntu permanently then you can weigh-up whether you want a wubi or a normal dual boot.

Angry Wubi Install failure and Windows 7 not loading

I need a solution to re-configuring the boot of Windows 7 after wubi install of Ubuntu has messed up the boot order as well as getting GRUB to show up so I can access my other Ubuntu install of 10.04 when I start my computer.

    Computer:

    HP Pavilion HPE h8-1260t

    OSs:

    Windows Loader:
    Windows 7
Ubuntu (the remnants of wubi install)

Grub accessed through Hiren's boot disk:

Ubuntu 10.04 (four possible selections for them)
    Memory test
    Windows 7 Loader

Windows 7 nor wubi is booting after installing wubi from a folder on C: drive to a partition I created to a new drive named F: .

Windows 7 gets frozen on the "Starting Windows" black screen with the animated windows logo when selected from Windows Loader and if I selected through Hiren's boot disk I get this message:

    file: \Boot\BCD

    status: 0xc000000e

info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data

Starting Windows in safe mode stops loading with this file being the last one showing:

    \windows\system32\drivers\CLASSPNP.SYS

and I get this message when I try to boot the Wubi install from Windows Loader:

    File : \ubuntu\winboot\wubildr.mbr

    Status:0xc00000098

Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt

    Here is the boot-info scrpit:

    My Process:

After first trying to install Ubuntu 11.10 (via boot disk) and failing to get to show up upon starting up the computer I formatted and deleted the partition. I tried again but with the Wubi.exe and the same problem arose. Removed Wubi and re-installed it this time from a folder on my C: drive and now Ubuntu shows up on Windows Loader but will not start and gives me the error message posted above.

I had then found out here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1691744 that 11.10 didn't work because GRUB was not installed properly or at all and tried to fix my second Wubi install with the recommended way that the post listed which was with "BOOT-REPAIR-DISK". I ran the recommended repair assuming it will only effect my wubi install and it doesn't work (probably because wubi uses Windows Loader and not GRUB).

When I start Windows 7 it asks me to access system recovery or start windows normally. When I start it normally I get "Starting Windows" image and goes no further. And start system recovery it starts up the HP recovery software and the only option being System Recovery which will re-install and wipe all data on the installed drive back to the factory default which I cannot do since I have valuable data on there that unfortunately was not backed up anywhere.

A day later I uninstalled wubi through a BOOT-REPAIR-DISK option (Which in retrospect I shouldn't have done), Installed Ubuntu 10.04 via boot disk, and learned that I probably need to restore Windows 7 through the process recommended here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1014708 by creating and using Windows Recovery Disk (which HP does not provide with new computers) by doing this:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/w...em-repair-disc

It didn't work saying that the Recovery Disk wasn't compatible with my version of Windows which shouldn't be but whatever.

So instead I tried Hiren's Boot Disk:

    http://www.hirensbootcd.org/download/

And I was able to boot a MBR list and select my install of ubuntu 10.04 which loaded fine. However, I have to do this each time I want to start my computer back up and use Ubuntu

    In summary I need:

    Windows 7 boot files repaired
and GRUB to show Ubuntu 10.04 as well as Windows 7 upon starting computer.

I have thoroughly searched every possible way to find these solutions and haven't. I can only do fixes through Ubuntu 10.04 or with Hiren's Boot Disk or a different boot disk if you guys can recommend one.

    Please help me out.

    Thank you.

    Re: Wubi megathread

    Update for post #1024

I have since formatted and deleted the partition with wubi installed on it in hopes of it no longer interfering with my Windows 7 and it no longer getting stuck on the "Starting Windows" (the black screen with the animated windows logo) but it didn't work.

I'm pretty sure that Windows is still getting hung up from files from wubi that were installed directly to my C: drive. And all that needs to happen is the boot files and folder created by wubi needs to be deleted, renamed, or uninstalled. However doing that from Ubuntu 10.04 is apparently and understandably not possible.

Grub is still not super-seeding Windows Loader upon booting my computer.

The only options for recovery offered by Windows and HP on my computer still says that I should wipe Windows and restore it to factory conditions and I'm still not willing to do that.

I've gone through so many suggested solutions (mostly only half-way through because of errors stopping the process or I've realized they aren't specific to my problem) that I no longer know what to actually look for.

I also am refusing to purchase a Windows Recovery Disk for several reasons. Firstly it doesn't make sense to purchase a CD when you could just download an iso from Windows or HP and make a boot disk yourself at no cost. Not to mention HP refuses to include them with their computers even though they have an exclusive agreement with Microsoft to force their customers to purchase Windows with their computer purchases. Which meant I couldn't have my computer come with Ubuntu or no Os at all on it so I could install it myself. So I had to pay $125 which I consider the price of wanting to play Steam Games. Also I have tried to use multiple Windows 7 Recovery Disk created multiple ways and all of them told me it they were incompatible with my copy of Windows 7. I'm guessing that it's because I need one specifically created for my individual computer and now I'm not really convinced that it would work if I did purchase one.

But regardless I know there is a simple solution to my problems... or at least I think there is. So here is my updated Boot Info:

    Re: Wubi megathread

    richardand,

Wubi doesn't interfere with Windows booting. I haven't seen any cases in the past 3 years where installing with Wubi breaks Windows. Once you're booting the Wubi Ubuntu install, of course there are ways to break Windows, although most of these involved Grub and have been long fixed.

So Wubi is not your issue. However, installing Ubuntu to partition as a dual boot can and does break Windows depending on how you install it. For example, there are reports that splitting a Windows partition during the install can cause issues. This requires a windows repair disk to correct. Also, some people manage to install grub to the windows partition - either overwriting the bootsector and/or creating a second /boot folder (as you have on /dev/sda3). So you have both a /Boot and a /boot directory. Of course, this is fine for Linux but Windows doesn't have case-sensitive directories so it might cause issues.

You also have a /dev/sda2 for which the file system is not recognised. This could be an encrypted partition, or a corrupted file system.

Finally, there was some talk about wubi not supporting EFI boot. I've seen this mentioned. I haven't seen any wubi installs on GPT (i.e. the bootinfoscript) so I have no idea how this works or doesn't work.

In terms of repairing windows: there is very little you can do from Linux unless it's something like removing that extra /boot directory (the one with the grub core.img in it). For most Windows problems you require a Windows repair CD.

    Hope that helps.

PS if you know someone who has the same type of Windows (ie. windows 7 64bit) then you can burn a windows repair cd for the cost of a blank CD. It doesn't have to be from your own install.
PPS or you can get the ISO for $9.75 from http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/window...-repair-discs/ and burn that to CD/USB

    Ubuntu Update Problem, on Wubi

    Grettings fellow ubuntu-men

I have this interesting problem on a Wubi Installation,

Installed 11.10, after a while some updates were release and did them, this changed the versions listed on the startup screen (grub), had 3.0.0.12 which works just fine.

Added 3.0.0.19 which just wont work, I select it to boot and it just stops on the boot-up with the background on, and the hdd just halts, have to ctrl-alt-del it and then select old version.

Tried updating again now have also 3.0.0.17 and it happens the same with this one.

Sorry for my lack expression capabilities but I seem to have woken up a bit more dumb today...

    Thanks for the help...

    Re: Wubi megathread

    jalescanor,

If you look back a page on this thread there is another user who had this same problem (miguelpires). You can read about it from post #988 and later. The issue was with the -17 kernel. At that time the -19 kernel had not been released (only in Proposed).

I don't think that the problem was fixed - but maybe miguelpires can answer that better.
