Hello and welcome to ubuntu forums.

What GPU does your system have?

If you go in your menus to System> Administration> Hardware Drivers, is there a driver listed for you to install?

What's your GPU? (Graphics Processing Unit)? Is it ATI Radeon? ATI Radeon HD? nVidia? Intel? Via? SiS? Matrox? ...?
If you don't know, go to Applications>Accessories>Terminal & type:

    lspci | grep VGA

That should tell you who made your GPU. Post the result here.
Also, how big is your monitor? If it's a 7" netbook, maybe the screen just can't handle better resolution.
