Should I be able to run programs written for a TI-89 on an 84?

Just wondering- I know that the 83 has too few resources but I've been looking at wikipedia and the 84 I'm getting is actually more powerful/equal to than the 89 as far as hardware goes, and I know both use TI-BASIC.
    I had to do it.

No, I own and 89 and 84. The languages are different. Also the type of file they read are different. What's worse is that in order to write programs for them you have to buy a cable with a program if you want the ease of typing on your computer or you can just type it on your calculator.

Even the versions of TIBASIC are different between the two calculators.
