Question [SOLVED] Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

My sound card works well because I have audio from the headphone jack, and adjustment with volume control works fine, but no sound at all from internal speakers. Any suggestions?

I am running 10.04 and all updates are applied. I also have duplicated this problem on Mint 8, Karmic, PCLinuxOS and OpenSUSE so it is not distro-unique. As stated, sound card configuration is fine with headphones so it is an output/config issue from what I can tell.

    Output of aplay -l

    cat /proc/asound/cards

HDA Intel at 0xf9bf8000 irq 21

I continue to search the forums and do web searches hoping for specific guidance to get the speakers going. Any assistance is appreciated! I do realize the HDA Intel is a major pain for users so I am trying to find problems specific to my card or exact issue

    Had same problem.
Here is what worked for me.

    Go to system menu
    -Select "Sound"
    In "Sound preferences" dialog
    -select "Output" tab
Go to "Connector:" pop up list.
    Change to "Analog Speaker"

This is also the only hiccup that I had in my upgrade.

I had tried that previously. My only options are "analog output" and "analog headphones". Somehow I need speakers to be enabled in my configuration.

Re: Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

The Intel 82801H seems to have had a lot of issues with linux over the last few years- Including:
    http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-b...sg2240239.html

Is this a 32 or 64 bit install?
Have the speakers ever worked- previous distro, windows?
Any settings in the BIOS re Speakers.
Any key combos that toggle the speakers.

Until someone with real knowledge responds, these are the straws I would be grabbing at:
Reload all the audio components with the package manager (Pulseaudio and ALSA) then check the Sound Preferences "Output" tab for speaker choice. Play with the choices in the "Hardware" tab of the Sound Preferences dialog and recheck the available choices in the "Output" tab.

Please don't be frustrated with my obvious nu-b status. Just trying to throw some stuff out there- until someone who actually knows something contributes.

Re: Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

This is a system that worked perfectly in Vista with speakers. It's never worked with the other distros of Linux I listed. However, it's a wireless keyboard with volume control that works well with headphones. Sound is perfectly clear and volume can be muted, increased and decreased normally. But when the headphones are not plugged in the internal speakers do not operate at all. It's a known issue with the Intel HDA configuration but I have not found a solution that fits my machine.

One example of the problem is any mixer installed does not have a speaker option listed, even with alsamixer via terminal. I have many others, such as headphones, mic, etc., but none for the speaker volume, as if the system does not even recognize them as available. I'm still digging through previous forum posts and looking for ideas. Thanks for the help offering. This driver seems to have caused a lot of problems for many users. Perhaps just getting a set of speakers to plug into the headphone jack would be the easiest and most immediate "fix", although that's just a workaround to a real problem.

Can you post the output of these terminal commands for me please:
    Code:
    uname -a
    cat /proc/asound/version
    head -n 1 /proc/asound/card*/codec#*
    Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
Please post text output using code tags. Also helpful is the make/model of your PC/Laptop.

Re: Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

    Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Open this file for editing:
    Code:
     gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
Insert these lines at the bottom:
    Code:
    options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
    options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba position_fix=1
Save. Close. Reboot. Check your levels in alsamixer.
    Code:
     alsamixer
Press F6 to select the correct soundcard.
Press F3 to show playback levels. F4 selects capture levels [or use <Tab>]
Use the left/right arrow keys to select and up/down arrow keys to change levels.
Go to "System>Preferences>Sound" and make sure the correct soundcard is default.

Re: Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

still no sound from speakers. I am in alsamixer and I have no speaker option. In sound configuration my output choices are still analog output and analog headphones. No speaker option.

Other things I can try? I did select the card using F6 in alsamixer.

Alsamixer also shows version 1.0.22 in case that's important. I did adjust different levels up into the red zones of each to see if I gained sound through the speakers, but nothing yet. I do have a visible option in alsamixer of "front" but it is at 00 and has no bar/graph above it and you cannot adjust it up or down.

Re: Headphones work-no internal speaker sound?

Here is a line from blacklist.conf within /etc/modprobe.d and I'm not sure why it is blacklisted:

    # ugly and loud noise, getting on everyone's nerves; this should be done by a
    # nice pulseaudio bing (Ubuntu: #77010)
    blacklist pcspkr

Here is my /etc/modprobe.d as a result of the changes you recommended:

    # autoloader aliases
    install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
    install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1
    install sound-slot-2 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-2
