Problem with ppp connection

Newbie nix_user having some difficulty configuring pppconfig and...56k dialup. After entering pppconfig info and typing sudo pon [myisp], I receive a "connect chatscript failed." As someone new to linux, I'm stumped. Would love a step-by-step answer. Acer Aspire 3680 laptop running windows xp. (512Mb ram, 51Gb hd, not sure what else you need). Warm regards, Jin
