Half life runs fine here.
Many people have reported a positive experience at: http://appdb.winehq.org/
It will work for most parts, but some configuration will probably be required and some flaws will surface. You'll most likely see a severe frame rate hit compared to Windows too.
Have you checked some of the native Linux FPS games as an alternative? Most people that likes HL will enjoy Urban Terror too and that's free. There's actually quite a few free Linux FPS games, even in the repositories.
Generally all Q3-engine based games will execute awesome on Ubuntu.
Wine isn't really a substitute for Windows, and Windows specific games will for most parts be terrible to play on top of Wine.
With steam or without? Without steam it worked outta the box. With steam it took a bit of toying but it worked great either way.
