Black screen after login in brand new 8.10

Hi all!
Just installed Intrepid over an old 8.04.1 that was running perfectly. CD installation, not upgrade.
Unfortunately I can't get trough the login screen. After username and password, all I get is an orange background screen where the mouse pointer is the only thing I can see (well, THIS works ok )...

My hardware: Dell Optiplex GX60, onboard Intel graphics, 1Gb RAM, Celeron 1.8 processor.

Oh, the Live CD was only able to run in safe graphics mode, but I don't know how to do this in the installed system...

Any help would be much appreciated!

Use the command ALT+CTRL+F6 to go in CIL mode.
and From there use the command

startx

Hi, lovelyvik293, thanks for attention. I'm afraid I can't do this; ALT+CTRL+F6 brings nothing whem that infamous black screen appears. Already tried this, but shows no CLI...

Edited thread's name because I just noticed that there is, in fact, an orange screen, something like a background, that shows after login. Could it possibly be the Gnome that doesn't start?

Any other ideas?

Considering that I can boot by the LiveCD in safe graphics mode, is there any way to boot the already installed system in safe graphics mode too? This option is not given on the GRUB menu, or later in the process... any hint?
