Pause of about 30 seconds during boot

    Hi all,

    I'm using a MacBook 2.1 with Lucid.

After i hit Enter in GRUB, there is a message on top of the screen saying "booting up", and it stays there for 20 to 30 seconds. Then everything proceeds normally. I think i caught a message saying that something couldn't be found, but it flashed too rapidly.

Here is an extract of my dmesg. I'm assuming the part between [] is timestamps, and it takes about 40 seconds to go from GRUB to the Login screen, so it fits. Nothing is happening during 32 seconds.

    Code:
[ 2.690053] usb 5-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
    [ 2.894315] usb 5-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
    [ 35.053835] udev: starting version 151
    [ 35.059728] Adding 1999992k swap on /dev/sda3. Priority:-1 extents:1 across:1999992k
Also, it seems udev is already being loaded just before that:
    Code:
    [ 0.874184] udev: starting version 151
    Any idea? Thank you!

maybe there is some more info into .xsession-errors or logs too

into /etc/default/grub there is a timer of 10s, can reduce it a little

    sudo dpkg --configure -a

Hi dino99, thank you for helping!

.xsession-errors indeed displays a few errors, even though I'm not sure whether they are from before or after the update. Pretty sure they're not relevant to the current issue, but it can't hurt to fix them.

It's got a few such errors:
    Code:
gnome-session[1272]: WARNING: Could not launch application '1099ea67a43f635db412599182336898000000023640027.desktop':
It seems gnome-session uses an old config file. So i went looking for it, and it seems it was a saved session. I've tried cleaning it up, I'll see how it goes next reboot.

Still nothing on the bigger, badder problem

Re: Pause of about 30 seconds during boot

Yeah, I get the same kinda thing before plymouth flashes up (except it's just a single blinking cursor against a black screen, no words, no status, kinda like the old black screens of death you'd get with Windows) - I think is just normal behavior, as it happens across all of my computers (except my powermac, which displays an "acpi length error" or something for a while, can't quite remember).

All up it takes roughly fourty seconds from post to login, with the plymouth screen appearing for like a split second in between that (after the blinking cursor, though).

It's as if the computer is loading files in the background, but just ignores them, or doesn't display any output for them. I don't know. Anyway, the dmesg output looks the same as mine (differences in i/o, though). It's interesting that I don't get the "booting up" message though.

Honestly though, most people don't experience the sub-ten second boot anyway (unless they've got a bleeding edge pc or a mid-range mac, or even a low-end sdd). If you ask me, i'd say the computer is doing what it's telling, it's just "booting up".

Sorry I can't be of anymore help.

edit: is that an extract of the dmesg output, or the entire thing?

Re: Pause of about 30 seconds during boot

    Thank you for your answer!

It is only an extract of the dmesg, i could output the entire thing, but I was afraid it might contain personal info.

I'm also attaching my "bootchart", in case it helps to determine whether it's normal or problematic behaviour (click the image for full size):

I'm not necessarily after a 10-second bootup; honestly, 10 or 30 is pretty much the same, but it really bothers me that it just stands there seemingly doing nothing. That and my display problems (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1468647 and http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1461210) are the only things that really prevent me from fully enjoying this new distro =)

It's best not to post it, then. What you posted would be the only relevant part of it, anyway.

It is kind of a hassle that it just "sits there" but I think it is actually doing something, just not telling you (kinda like a text boot, but without the output - if that even makes sense), or loading files in the backgrounnd. I did get a similar (although unrelated) problem, that happened because the computer was waiting for the hard drive to spin up (but this was on a really ancient computer), this one could be related to hardware. I think, as long as it doesn't affect the actual operating system, or any of your files, it should be fine to leave as is.

I'll take a look at your other problems, and see what I can do about them.

edit: a quick glance at the bootchart, and I'd say that was right. it is loading these things, just not telling you. (unless I missed something important there)
