make sure you haven't enabled Microsoft proprietary features in Windows like dynamic disks or whatever as they may prevent the drive form being used for other OSes.

Was it seen during the install?

Ubuntu was run on this hard drive before, for some years, it just stopped working. I didn't explicitly change anything in Windows.

It still sees the drive in windows. On startup, it says

    Scanning and repairing drive (//?/Volume{46a173d9-2fba-4e20-bb66-ea940223e454}):0

Re: Can't log into Ubuntu in dual boot with Windows

The image in post 27 from Disk Management shows nothing on the 'D' drive which you say is your Linux/Ubuntu. It shows free space as 100%. In fact only what windows refers to as the 'C' partition which is the windows primary filesystem shows partially used and all others have 100% free. Windows default installs will not show anything on a Linux filesystem as far as the ability to read or write to that partition and what you see in Disk Management is about the extent of what you will see in windows. If you ran the 'repair' option from windows you reference above it might have overwritten anything on what you thought was your Linux partition.
