If the post above does not solve your problem feel free to post here. Remember to state everything you know about the computer.
If you have the option please run
Code:
sudo lshw > lshw.txt
and
post lshw.txt in code tags.
B) I want to provide an answer
Many users in Ubuntuforums have experience in old hardware and are eager to help. Thanks, that’s what keeps the forum running. However, a few guidelines should be observed before posting:
- Please don’t provide an answer based only upon searching the web. We are happy for contributions, but a lot of dubious advice exists, and quoting it does not help anyone. Please only post if you have hands-on experience with something close to the hardware and software in question.
- Don’t take for granted that there is a solution. Not every old computer can be brought into usable condition, so sorry, you have to recycle this dinosaur might be the only sensible answer.
- Contributions to the original post are welcome.
- If you see a post somewhere which should be merged into this thread please send me a message and I shall take care of it.
Proactive advice for people who like older IBM ThinkPads...
I just cleaned up and donated two T42s, and am currently using this T43, which was basically new when I got it. It sat on the desk of the owner, and it's workload consisted of light emails, and Solitare. I took it apart, cleaned it up, bumped the RAM from 512MB to the maximum of 2GB, and I liked it so much when I was done, that it is now my everyday laptop. I run Xubuntu 12.04.2 on this one, and it's very quick and solid.
My only problem, is that I can not figure out how to get the sound working. I am suffering from the well documented "Dummy Output" issue. If anyone can supply an answer to this, it would be highly appreciated.
The future of X/L/Ubuntu on these machines...
T42s and earlier models will not take a PAE kernel, so, 12.04 is your last shot for Ubuntu or Xubuntu (not sure about Lubuntu). T43s and newer, will take the PAE kernel, and I've had both 12.10 and 13.04 installed on this computer. They both worked fine. The added RAM makes a big difference, and is highly recommended for these notebooks to stuff them as full as you can with additional memory. One caution though - you will discover, that adding the second stick of RAM, is not for the weak of heart (it's under the keyboard).
