Thanks - I'll give that a try. The rogue files are not shown as immovable, but they're not fragmented and are stuck in the middle of the drive.

I'm used to Ubuntu as a stand-alone OS but would like to install 8.10 (or maybe 9.04) as dual boot on a machine with a 500GB HD that already has XP installed.
The Windows defrag utility leaves...
Sorry - I've no idea about that format, but Audacity handles most things and is available from the repos.
The standard Ubuntu kernel doesn't support wireless on the eee PC. You can install the Array kernel which is modified for the eee PC and other netbooks, but by far the easiest solution is to install...
I inserted a USB stick and for good measure also inserted a CF card in the card reader. Both showed in Places (and the Nautilus sidebar) but didn't auto-mount. I clicked on each of them and they...
Sorry - that hasn't worked either. Do you have to reboot for it to take effect?
Also, in your first message you have "true" and in the second 'true'. Does that matter?
Thanks for the suggestion, but USB still doesn't auto-mount.
The strange thing is that I have changed nothing - it just stopped working.
When I plugged them in they used to auto-mount, the drive icon would appear on the desktop and Nautilus would open to display the contents.
Now they do not mount when I plug them in. They have to...
USB drives and sticks are no longer auto-mounted. They appear in the Nautilus sidebar and will mount if I click on them, and then they work as normal.
This started to happen a few days ago (after...
I've recently done a clean install of 8.10 on an Acer Aspire 5610 to replace 8.04. A couple of things don't work that did under Hardy.
1. I've set 'Acer Laptop' as the keyboard layout. If I go...
I've been using Ubuntu on desktop and laptop machines for a couple of years, and recently bought an Asus eee PC 901 with Xandros. If this had been my first experience of Linux, I would been one of...
There is a fix for this - thanks to zeemor on the Ubuntu-eee forums for finding it.
The problem is with permissions in /var/tmp. If you set full permissions for everyone in /var/tmp, it all works.
As snowpine says, Ubuntu-eee 8.04.1 makes life easier by including the Array kernel. Most things work out of the box, although there are a couple of minor bugs.
New versions of Ubuntu-eee...
Given the circumstances, I would turn off automatic updates. Hardy is quite stable now and there aren't so many critical updates.
If you do want to install critical updates automatically, I would...
I don't think that's the problem, and you should be able to extend permissions to Group and Others from the Permissions tab in Nautilus. But the .pdf file is yours so permissions for others shouldn't...
There is already a PDF directory in my home directory. CUPS-PDF managed to create this the first time I tried to print to .pdf.
Unfortunately nothing lands there, or anywhere else.
This isn't a...
OK, I've now tried CUPS-PDF on two other machines (laptop and desktop) running Ubuntu 8.04, and it works as expected. The file appears in ~/PDF as it should, and there are no errors.
As far as I...
I also use Ubuntu-eee on an eee PC 901, and that's the only machine on which I've tried (unsuccessfully) to use CUPS-PDF.
Apparmor can be forced to let things through by...
sudo aa-complain...
After trying to print to PDF, if you look in /var/log/cups/cups-pdf_log you may find an error message similar to...

I'm running Ubuntu-eee on a 901, and am very happy with it.
Go to www.ubuntu-eee.com and download the ISO file. copy this to a USB stick (1GB or larger) using UNetBootin (Windows or Linux).

If you enable the Medibuntu repository, Google Earth is in it and you can install from Synaptic - much easier!
If all you want to do is delete the folders/files...
Open a terminal or Alt-F2
gksudo nautilus
You are then in the file manager as root and can delete what you want. ;)
I'm running Ubuntu-eee on a 901 and it's miles better than Xandros. Ubuntu-eee includes the Array kernel so wireless etc works out-of-the box. It's a pity that Asus didn't ship the eee PC with this...
If you'd like to free up drive space, a useful and safe command is...
sudo apt-get clean
That removes the aptitude cache in /var/cache/apt/archives
You'd be amazed how much is in there! You...
If you are comfortable with Hardy, I would stick with it. Intrepid may offer some benefits but there are no major application updates (e.g. Open Office) and many people have had problems with it.
