I'm actually working on some other problems, but...
Yep! Just did an OpenOffice update. After wrecking grub, mouse is now frozen in Ubuntu 10.04, working in Win2k.

Hello, dmizer!
I've been lurking on this thread for some time: fascinating reading, and a grand display of kindness and civility it is. I've implemented all of your Post No. 1 tips, and several...
I found out how to install gsview - it requires libgtk-1.2.so.0, for which I found I had to use all three links below:

Pretty much the same problem as the Original Poster, so I'll be following this one.
I can restart with
sudo shutdown -r now
but it doesn't look too good if a *******r is looking.

Yes,I have the same prolblem. The euro-standard On-Off buton takes me to a dialogue box - if I click on Restart, it closes a few window-frsmes, but then stalls.
I can open a terminal and type:

I think I have nailed this one.
I read a long discussion on using bitorrent under Linux (I have no interest in using torrent to hog bandwidth, but the same error cropped up there, too). By analogy...
Dear CharlesA,
I tried what you suggested. I actually get -

Thank you for suggestions, fellows!
