lubuntu is designed to be lightweight and fast. If startup time is an issue, then it can very much be a solution.

Upgrades can be problematic, I prefer doing a new clean install of the newer version. The new 16.04 LTS version Xenial Xerses...

It sounds like you have everything under control. Regarding the overheating, it may need a new cooling fan rather than a cleanout.

A screen shot of your partition table would be helpful, to give us an idea of what may have happened.
The server version comes without a GUI, which accounts for it's smaller size. It's not what you want.
I use lubuntu myself, very happy with it.
Or you can wait a few weeks and get the 16.04 stable version.
