[SOLVED] Programs slow to respond and load

    I have a Compaq Presario S4300NX
I have added 512 more ram to that,

so P4 HT with 1gig of ram.

I decided to switch to Ubuntu and have noticed that programs take longer to load and respond then XP on this machine. And that the Internet is noticeably slower then with XP.

What I am wondering is what steps should I take to narrow down some problem spots and perhaps improve this a bit?

Quite often, this can be because the correct drivers for a video card haven't been loaded.

What video card / chipset do you have and have you loaded the specific driver?

Are you using hardy? I experienced those problems also so I ditched it.. for a moment.

My problem starts at 2nd reboot.

I have 2.5GB RAM running Ubuntu Hardy 64 bit.

Now I am down to Gutsy Gibbon 64 bit.

I do hope you get a good response, because this will help me too.

There's an app called "preload" that runs in the background as soon as you start up, and it indexes the programs you use the most and loads them a little bit (usually a few seconds) quicker. I think it's in the official repos, but if it isn't, you can just Google it and find out how to install the package. I've been using it for a few months and I've never had an issue with it. Hope it helps!

looking online all I have been able to find is:
64-megabyte Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2

I have no idea if the correct drivers are being used. How do I check that?

    [edit]
discovered the problem after much head scratching was wit the ram install that I had done. didn't pair the ram and after removing the 512 stick it was at least 4 times faster
