Ubuntu Gnome slows down regualrly after update

After the announcement that Ubuntu is switching from Unity to Gnome I decided to switch as well. I upgraded from 16.10 to 17.04 and also installed gnome-desktop to get Ubuntu Gnome. Now the laptop freezes every now and then and in general quite slow. I wonder if I have to reinstall Ubuntu Gnome to try to fix it or there is any other way to rectify the problem.

The first thing I'd try is to disable any/all running Gnome extensions -- those can be troublesome.

Also possible a kernel upgrade is causing a GFX issue. But try the extensions first.

Yes, it looks like a problem with extensions. I disabled it and it is better. I wonder if it is possible to fix. Th eonly extension I was using was open weather. However, I still have a problem when the laptop freezes entirely and I have to reboot it.
