Kubuntu 17.04 apps losing menus

When I first log into the the Kubuntu Plasma desktop, things look quite nice, but after a certain amount of time working in it -- it seems random so far -- I notice that apps lose their menus. The space is still there at the top for a menu bar, but it's blank. I can hover over it or click on it, but no response. Has anyone else reported this behavior? I was hoping to move to KDE full time since I'm no fan of the Gnome desktop, but this is pretty much a show-stopper.

It's a long time since I used KDE but I wonder if this is a theme problem.
Try another theme in the settings to see if that helps bring menus back.
