    Update manager works without password

Some times the up date manager needs a password and sometimes it just works without ever asking for a password. I was wondering why?

It usually requires password when a kernel upgrade is expected.

From what I remember, it goes like this, new software installations like a new kernel require the password, but updates to software you have doesn't.

The thinking behind this change is that if users are frequently asked to authenticate they will simply click OK without thinking about it and may authenticate malicious code. So, there is in Ubuntu a reduction in the need to authenticate in the hope that we will think about what we are authenticating and so not authenticate malicious code without thinking.
It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

That makes a lot of sense. I remember the days of Windows XP when a security screen would pop up and I would instinctively click 'ok' not even knowing what I was doing or what I was allowing.

    Thank you.
