Question VLC causes sytem to freeze in 12.04

All of a sudden, when I launch VLC and try to play a video it freezes my whole system including the mouse. The only options I have is to press the power button or use the REISUB series of commands. I noticed that there is sound. I've been checking around the boards and a lot of the posts with issues similar to mine seem to be several years old. I have Lubuntu 13.10 dual installed and when I switch over to Lubuntu videos play just fine.

Someone on askubuntu.com suggested I play around with preferences>video>output and changing the default setting to something else worked for me.

If you have 13.10 installed and working why do you care for an older version like 12.04?

I tried Xubuntu 13.04 but I had several issues with it. 1) I couldn't get it to stay connected to any wireless devices and 2) No matter what video player I used trying to play videos saved off my computer caused it to freeze. I never could find a solution to either of those problems.
