Question xsane "insane" constant error message Ubuntu 10.10

I have an HP officejet 4500 scanner (multifunction gadget with ethernet AND usb ports). Right now, I only care about scanning. I've installed the HP-LIP (hp linux imaging and printing), and run Ubuntu 10.10

I want to use the automatic document feeder with xsane, but no matter when I put the documents in, I get a constant "Failed to start scanner - Document feeder out of documents".

Only power-cycling the scanner, killing xsane (sometimes with force quit), and restarting everything from scratch, seems to help.

I'm trying to scan about 800 pages, and this having to power cycle the scanner after each 27-ish page batch is killing my productivity

    Two questions:

    1. Where can I look for log files - I need to know whose software to blame
    2. What do I need to do to fix this?
