I shall be looking to either upgrade or replace my 4 year old PC next year and am looking to research which hardware (motherboard - processor - memory - hard drive) works well with Linux.
Is there a list somewhere?

There is the ubuntu certified hardware page at: http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/.
Many laptops here running 12.04 and 12.10 all Intel based and all are Toshiba. No problems at all and all hardware working 100% out of the box from the L500 to L650. 5 laptops so far.
Thanks, this is helpful.
I have looked at the Ubuntu hardware certification page and that's pointing in the right direction.
I/we need to ask Canonical if they do the same thing on and for individual components. I personally prefer to build my own systems so am always looking for the basic combinations of components, however the certification page is giving some good clues.
I am currently in contact with ASRock who are being quite helpful too but are unable to answer questions with the certainty that certification brings.
