Need to recover missing data

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 2500 Laptop, and am running Xubuntu 10.10 on a live cd. I recently goofed (BIG time) and messed up the Windows XP installation (I chopped off about 5 gigs of the windows boot partition LOL). I need the laptop ASAP, meaning NOW. I have a 4-H presentation to present tomorrow (it's a judged thing) and I need to practice on my laptop.

My problem is the same: It will only let me go to 800x600 resolution. I have seen a bunch of posts saying to edit the xorg.conf file, and that it's in /ect/x11, but I can't find it. It just isn't there. Is this something that only appears after ubuntu is installed?
