Unhappy Graphics compliications after 8.10 update (geforce 8800 gt)

    Hello all,

As always, I would like to say thank you ahead of time for taking the time to help me.

So, while upgrading to 8.10, the installation crashed and I spent like 2 days attempting to not have to totally reload. After alot of stumbling around on the ubuntu forum, I managed to get the whole thing back up. I basically just finished up the install in the terminal. The only remaining issue that I have is that my video card is no longer being recognized correctly. I can run at 1680x1050 with correct colors, but it doesn't recognize that it is a geforce 8800 gt. When I try to utilize an old xorg.conf file, it goes into safe video mode after I restart xserver. I have had the same complication occur when I try to go into System>Administration>Hardware Drivers and install any of the listed compatible nvidia drivers as I do when I try to load an old xorg configuration. The following is the error listed while I'm in safe graphics mode, I dont know if this is helpful information:

    Code:
    7615 7193
    xinit /etc/gdm/failsafeXinit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe with-gdm -- /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7 -br -once -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe -logfile /var/log/Xorg.failsafe.log

Upgrades do sometimes cause weird issues .. it might not be worth your time to debug .. I'd suggest a clean fresh install

Exclamation Re: Graphics compliications after 8.10 update (geforce 8800 gt)

I'm afraid a fresh install isn't going to help, yet. I've been working on getting my Nvidia Geforce 6200 to be recognized for 3 days now. I've tried multiple methods, different drivers, I even had a beta Nvidia installer try to recompile to driver. No good. The Nvidia drivers are only available from Nvidia apparently, and until they get them fixed we're stuck with dead displays. I'd recommend getting some other video card than Nvidia, because Ubuntu isn't the only distro freaking out on their drivers.

Re: Graphics compliications after 8.10 update (geforce 8800 gt)

I've got a GeForce 7900 and I'm seeing the same error, "Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)", in my xorg log file.

So at least now that I know that nVidia is a company to avoid... which graphics card companies are linux-friendly? Just so I know, next time I'm buying a desktop

Re: Graphics compliications after 8.10 update (geforce 8800 gt)

I had some trouble with my 8400gs on my laptop after an upgrade to 8.10. I downloaded the latest nVidia drivers (180) and installed those, and this fixed the problem. None of the drivers in the hardware drivers worked for my gpu.

    Hope this helps

I have been using a GeForce 6200 for well over a year, upgraded to 8.10 and no issues. So not sure of the difference you experience and why my system is flawless?
