I've got this piece of museum lying around: (Pentium MMX 166Mhz); this was one of my first PCs and I'd really like to get some 'use' out of it...
Could anyone recommend an ubuntu/linux distro that could possibly perform on it?

how much ram has it got? because that can make a huge difference on what you can do.
personally i would try ubuntu server, make a small web/file server. perhaps try and find a lightweight graphical environment if you want to turn it into a desktop machine. but thats probably all your going to get out of it.
i made a web server out of an old laptop when the screen on it broke. check out its low specs here http://rob-server.co.uk/phpsysinfo/
Dell Vostro 1500: Intel T7250, 4GB RAM (800MHz), nVidia 8600M GT, Intel 3945AGB Pro Wireless.
Ubuntu 10.04 + Windows 7 dual boot (damn games!)
If you want to gu *buntu you better start with Xubuntu. I don't think the bigger brothers will be functioning too well.
Another great choise (using the XFCE windowmanager) would be Zenwalk!
Obviously you will have great success with DSL or Puppy etc..
A wealth of information in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=575456
Personally I would recommend DSL (Damn Small Linux) or Puppy in this case.
Yes, try Puppy Linux. It should do quite well on that compared to almost anything else.
i've loaded in the live-cds ubuntu 7.10, ubuntu 8.04 and xubuntu
the live-cd screen (the black screen with install, memory test, etc...) appears, than in a split second 3 white lines appear and the monitor goes to 'no signal'
ram........ 32768k
tried adding an sd ram.. but it didn't recognize it...
Hi,
With 32MB of RAM not many desktop / window manager will work. Maybe DSL. Forget GNOME / KDE / Xcfe.
FWIW, a standard install (text-only, no GUI) of Debian Etch will work if you've 500MB of disk space in the machine. You could use the machine as a NAS or local web server ...
Main system: Dell 1420n - C2D T5250, 4GB RAM, 120GB SATA. Ubuntu 8.04.3.
Assorted VMs (via VBox). Favorites: Fedora, FreeBSD, Solaris.
Xubuntu i the matter of choice for people who likes Xfce. Xubuntu is in fact as heave has Ubuntu and uses about the same resources. If you want to install Xfce and not Xubuntu I wold not think that is great either.
Try a distro with/thak can feature Openbox, Blackbox or Fluxbox (Openbox is the lightest I think)
any tips on how could i use this as a web server, even without desktop installed
i'm currently installing dsl..
links would be more than enough
thanks to all!
