At least you now that the error seems to be because of pango, which is the library used to render the text. Are you using pango markup? you could try removing it if that's the case.

Why don't you run the interpreter using gdb and take a look at the backtrace?

Python is slower than lower level languages like C or C++, of course, but you won't have any problems, as you are not going to write Gears of War 2 :P
