    When I launch the Thunar file explorer on Xubuntu, the first time I launch it after a reboot it takes about 30 seconds to launch. Subsequent launches are almost instantaneous.

    well, xorg.conf is in /etc/X11/ and menu.lst is in /boot/grub/. You'll need to be root to edit them - the way I do it is to use the "nano" editor, like this:
