I solved this problem - amazingly simple - by installing openssh-server on the local client!!!!

I have read DOZENS of the postings I found by searching with the string in the subject above and none helps.

I found the advice above useful, with some differences.

For the incoming server, I used the IP address found from nslookup,

nslookup imap.comcast.net
Server: 127.0.0.53...

Well, I'll be darned: I switched the UI to Ubuntu (was Xubuntu) after upgrading to 17.10 and, voila, Skype audio works!! Go figure.
