When my system boots up.. the Ubuntu logo in white stays up for about 10 seconds. Is there a way to shorten this time. Windows boots in about 7 seconds less..and I think this is the problem....

Get wallpaper tray in synaptic... works great for me ; )

One point... make sure the drivers you use are for the archetecture your using... 32 bit drivers won't work on 64 bit linux.. I know.. I tried LOL!! Even tho my drivers were supposed to work on 64...

I use my bb storm to tether on Karmic..and did on Jaunty. You can use Berry4all or Barry. I think that's the other one. Give em a try ; ) I did my laptop...and my desktop !!
