Debian 8 is a good alternative.
Seems much more responsive and stable than ubuntu ever was..
I moved to Debian (and xubuntu in one machine) when unity came. Was positively surprised.

Here is a link about restoring windows bootloader
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreUbuntu/XP/Vista/7Bootloader
Well..
When you deleted your Ubuntu-partition, you also deleted part of your boot loader (grub) So now your grub wont work any longer.
You could re-install ubuntu with a separate /boot partition...
Does it work untill next time you boot your machine, if you run these 2 commands in the terminal?
synclient TapButton2=2
synclient TapButton3=3
Editing the 50-synaptics.conf file should work,...
Just installed warzone from the .tar.xz file which you gave the link to.
Pretty standard.
Here is what I did step by step:
1. Extracted the tar.xz to a folder with "Archive Manager"
2. Went...
I think you have to give the bs (blocksize) to dd as an argument. Like this: (CD sectors are 2048 bytes, so this copies sector for sector.)
For bittorrent download (recommended)
https://www.debian.org/CD/torrent-cd/
And for direct download.
https://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/
PS. Stable is the best.
But why didn't you just use...
I am running windows 8.1 pro (64bit) in virtualbox, and it seems to be working quite well even though I only have 4GB of RAM on my machine.
I enabled 3d and 2d acceleration and 2 processors in it...
I have one free and legal windows 8 pro license (came with the machine)
To do something with it I decided to install it in virtualbox. Because, hey, you never know, maybe I will need it someday.....
Why dont you install Debian then?
It is pretty much the same than xubuntu, but nothing ubuntu related in it...
I use xubuntu and like its file-manager Thunar.
Thunar is nowdays quite a lot lot like what nautilus used to be.
If you are installing it for someone else, why not install something, that wont need as much maintenance?
I prefer to install Debian stable (with xfce) for other peoples machines, that I have to...
Those commands only work, if the "other" user is root.
I would like to run firefox as another user (who is NOT root)
Is that possible.?
The reason:
I have a separate user for connecting to...
It seems you have the same line:
deb http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main
in 2 files:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google.list
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
and those...
Oh. Just came to my mind.
Your problem might be just that the UUID of your swap-partition has changed (eg. if it has been re-formatted)
and that is why your swap entry in your /etc/fstab -file...
does
sudo swapon /dev/sdbX
(where X is your swap partitions number) do anything for you?
If that didnt work:
You can re-format that partition to be swap by:
sudo mkswap /dev/sdbX
Danger!!...
I use a program called volti
Volti is iin the repos.
Works very well. (I am using alsa sounds.)
For your own legal safety.
In Ubuntu you don't really need antivirus, but and it is a big BUT. Nowdays many banks etc.. have rules, that say, if something goes wrong with your internet-bank you...
I disagree.
For your own safety you should have an antivirus program installed.
I recommend installing clamtk (antivirus which uses clamav)
In Ubuntu you dont really need it, but and it is a big...
Your printer has nothing to do with that error, so dont remove its driver..
Ubuntu's package repositories (the places, where you install programs to ubuntu) are signed with a pgp key, which is...
To me, your problem sounds like you have a too small /boot partition.
If you have a big disk, and lots of free space, then you could easily have big enough boot partition too.
Kernels are not...
You have so much memory, that I don't think you would really need a swap partition.
And since you have already partitioned your HD it is too much work.
If I was you I would make a 1-2GB...
Hmm..
It seems that my car was designed by Microsoft then.
Cause that is how it works... (Its a Renault Clio)
I would choose the one with intel processor.
And why?
Intel and AMD processors are about as good in my opinion.
I would rather get a Nvidia GPU, but I guess AMD:s GPU:s are ok too.
The...
