there's no point putting it onto a usb disk if it cannot boot from it except using it for wubi....
how about download the desktop iso to a usb disk from another computer download wubi and put that .iso file in the same folder and wubi will use that disc to do it, thats an easy solution....
figured it out....changed sound out to alsa digital and it worked.

I still think u should try nvidia-settings or displayconfig-gtk...i have had res problems with my nvidia card and these helped to fix my resolution nicely....a wubi install is a regular install just...
If you use Synaptic most of the time and mix in with aptitude you should be ok if you run
sudo apt-get autoremove as stated above to make sure you don't have useless package dependencies floating...
maybe try
gksu diplayconfig-gtk tho nvdia-settings has worked better for me in the past
