    ubuntu 8.10 sound problem after startx

    I have an HP NC6220. I installed a barebone (command line) system with ubuntu 8.10 alternate cd. I also installed xorg, alsa-utils, and some other additional packages. Before startx, if I typed amixer, it gave me a list of controls (i.e. Master, PCM, etc.). After startx, it gave an error: "amixer: mixer attach default error: No such file or directory". Anyone have any idea what's is going on here?
