    mIRC alternative

Basically, i've been an mIRC user for 12 years now, and i really would like to switch to something open source, something that's more extendable.

The problem is, that i cannot find any linux irc clients that fully support window tiling. This is my current mIRC setup. http://cshadowrun.googlepages.com/mIRC.png

It's a right nightmare running mIRC inside a virtual machine, and i really hate it. I'd love to get off mIRC.

If anyone knows of a linux client that can do window tiling like that, and is reasonably extendable. I'd love to know! I'd prefer something GUI based if possible.

Not a GUI, but you can tile irssi using plugins etc I think?

I don't care for splitting but I'm quite sure it's possible with irssi.
Check this link this might be what you mean ?

Yea. i checked out irssi and it won't split vertically, only horizontally :S

    Rule #1

Irssi cannot do vertical splits, only horizontal splits. That is, windows can only be arranged from top to bottom, never from side to side.

xchat is a popular IRC client... not sure how well you can go about customising it though.

xchat doesn't support window tiling at all.

If you want to go about it differently you could always find a lightweight irc client and run multiple instances in a tiling wm.

Unfortunatly this suffers the same problem as clients without tiling. I'm on so many channels that my task list would be completely full, and it would be a total nightmare. If i wanted to do it like that i'd have to code my own switchbar, which is a long job

    Fascinating discussion in #multiboxing!

I'm juuuust curious if you've tried it in wine? It's been about 12 years SINCE i've used mIRC, and that screenshot is slicker than anything I've seen for linux. I think I'm gonna try it.

Thanks for the laugh! (re: discussion in screenshot channel)
