    Does iTunes U require iTunes, by any chance?

    I am not positive, but I would think that if it is an itunes streaming server of any sort it would use the itunes streaming protocols. That would mean it is a DAAP server. Rhythmbox has a daap plugin, but does not work with video. Unless I am mistaken, Banshee (another player) has a daap plugin and plays video. I would say that is a good place to start.

    Well after clicking the link provided I would say that your issues are deeper than any of that. Unless you can connect directly to the server (skip the webpage) You may not be able to do that. Contact your IT dept and ask them for the ip and port of the daap stream, if that is even what it is, and you should be able to use that.

    Otherwise, it looks like you need itunes. Maybe you could use a virtual machine with VBox and use a windows guest.

    You need iTunes to view that link. iTunes is owned by Apple Computer. They do not make a Linux version of iTunes.

    If you want to use iTunes on a Linux machine, your options are (in my order of preference):

    1. Install Windows XP (SP2 or later) along side of your Linux installation in a dual-booting arrangement. You can use Linux for important things, but you will have to leave the session and reboot the machine into Windows to use iTunes. I prefer this option because in my experience this is the most stable and trouble-free way to use iTunes, especially in conjunction with an iPhone3G or late model iPod;

    2. Install Windows (XP SP2 or later) into a virtual machine manager and install iTunes into that;

    3. Install the WINE Windows compatibility layer and hope iTunes will work under that (last time I checked, it didn't but it's been awhile since I tried it).

    You could also ask MIT for the name of the genius who locked this particular service into a proprietary and expensive single-vendor arrangement. When you find it give it a swift kick in the shins.
