I can't record sound on Ubuntu Studio

    Hi,
I am new to this forum. I use Ubuntu Studio and I want to record my own music using instruments and microphone.
I have some basic Linux experience with Debian based OS like Knoppix 3, Edubuntu.
    Here 's my question:

I tried out my conf using
    System > Preferences > Sound...
but it seems that recording is not properly configuarated. The test sound does not sound quite good. And when I plug in a jack of a music player in the line-in of my system, I can seem to have it played through Linux.

Is there some basic requirement before having sound recording working?

Can you elaborate a little? Is it sound output or recording that you were testing, and what seemed to be wrong with it? Didn't it come through at all, or did it sound garbled or skippy?

Do you mean that it seems to be working, or that you cannot get it working?

It could be that you need to do some configuration for ALSA and/or PulseAudio. I know little about the latter, but I'm sure we can try to find something out if we can first clear up what exactly the problem seems to be.
