Hey folks,

I just upgraded my son's conputer to Ubuntu 8.10 and I am trying to configure his wireless network settings for a static IP address. The problem seems to be that the 'Network Configuration' app under preferences doesn't seem to have any actual effect on the settings.

I have managed to set the static IP address with ifconfig (and can ping computers on my network, but not beyond subnet), but I can't find out how to manually set the gateway and dns server addresses from the command line. It should be a piece of cake, but I can't find a thing.

I upgraded the machine with a wired connection in my office and took it to his room to connect to wireless adapter.
