M-Audio 7.1 strange issue (fresh install of ubuntu 8.10)

Hello to the community first of all

I am trying to change to Ubuntu and these are my free steps in that direction

so I have a sound problem for some reason I have no system sound and no flash sound in firefox

have tried this with a new 32bit install and with a new 64bit install
same thing every time I can listen to music and I can listen to any kind of video format but I have no sys sounds and no sound in firefox

I have also (in one attempt and following a guide) removed the alsa drivers and have installed new OSS just to see if that had to do with anything ...but it wasn't the case

I have 2 systems mine and a friends one. In my friends one all is working perfectly (no M-audio)

that is strange I do have system sound coming from my analog out

and everything else comes from digital out (spdif coaxial) that I normally connect to my sound sys

I Am totally lost


anyway to be able to use digital for all?? :S
